Carpe Diem: Making Your Lives Extraordinary, Period 4, Class 7

"Last class, kiddies," Drake said. "Gather 'round, because I'm going to tell you a story. Once upon a time there was a little boy who was half-human, half-demon. He got picked on by all the other demons because he was a half-breed, so he vowed to be the biggest baddest demon he could and make them all respect him. Now this demon had a BFF, we'll call him Drake, who told him, 'Buddy, this isn't right, this isn't you, this isn't who you really want to be. You're just going to make yourself miserable trying to please people who aren't worth it.' But the demon said 'Grrr argh' and went about his evil business and was generally miserable and unpleasant. That is, until he met a pretty little witch and fell in love and realized Drake was right, as he always was, and that he was only being all demony to impress the other demons, not because that was what he really wanted. So he gave up being evil, embraced his human soul, and they...well, they didn't entirely live happily ever after because his former boss kept coming after him and eventually possessed him and then he died and came back and went a little crazy and died again but not really. But that's not the point...well, maybe partially the point because even while he was 'dead' he was watching over his witchy love and sent his BFF to make sure that said witchy love didn't give up on love and that her witchy sister who totally doesn't teach here didn't lose her love, either, and then the BFF cheated and let the witches know just who was watching out for them and maybe they should reach out and help him and then they'll live happily ever after.

"But I digress. So what is the point? The point is, be true to yourself. You know who you are -- though sometimes you may have to search for that -- better than anyone else. You're going to get pressure from your family, your friends, your employers, everyone around you. You're going to tangle with duty and destiny and things that scare the crap out of you. You're going to struggle with a need to be accepted and to fit in. But trust yourself. Trust your heart. You know what you want and what you need better than anyone else ever will. Don't wait until it's too late to do what you want to do. You're all capable of great things, even those of you who aren't magic or mutants or from another planet. And you'll all be pushing up daisies one day, so don't waste any time to make your mark. Carpe diem, seize the day, and make your lives extraordinary. As a very wise man once said, 'Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Shit, what a ride!"'"

Drake fluttered a hand at his throat. "I'm a little verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves."

Bod understood the story and thought it was quite heartfelt and meaningful. It made him smile even if, somewhere, it made him a little sad too.

The wacky was, Kennedy had never really completely gotten Drake, even after she'd softened up enough to be pretty much okay with who he was.

He'd sort of piqued her interest really quickly with the story, though, because she could so be on board with the whole falling-for-a-witch thing herself, and before she realized it she was leaning forward with her arms folded on her desk, paying pretty close attention to the entire thing.

And then Drake got to the end, and Kennedy realized she was grinning-- pensively, maybe, but broadly. Because yeah; that was totally how she wanted to go out at the end, whenever-- and she was estimating sooner rather than later-- that would be.

Zack was frowning thoughtfully through Drake's lecture, today.

That was what it all boiled down to in the end, wasn't it? Be true to yourself, and the rest will follow?

That was definitely something for him to keep in mind, especially from here on out.

Cloud was so not telling Drake he was going to miss his class, a lot. He would just think about it in silence and try not to look as if it meant as much as it actually did to him.

Okay, that was... yeah. There were times when Bobby doubted that he knew himself better than anyone else but in general, on the whole, Drake's words struck a chord, and he found himself grinning by the end of the speech, even if the grin was accompanied by an undercurrent of sadness at the idea of, well. Endings.

Didi listened closely, a slight, enigmatic smile on her face. She liked the story. She liked Drake. And she thought George Carlin was a genius.

It struck her as all being very good advice.

After the last few weeks, Sookie was more than a little aware of her own mortality. The class struck a chord with her, and she smiled softly, even if she was tearing up just a little bit.

Ellie listened to the story as well as the advice about being herself, and smiled. Though, like others, there was a sadness behind the smile as thinking about the end was not exactly pleasant.

Jason didn't understand exactly what Drake's story was about, but he could tell that it didn't add up to something good, and since Drake was one of Jason's nicer, saner teachers, that made him pretty sad as well.

Emma had been her normal, blonde self upon arrival, but something about Drake's story was making her... disquiet.

By the time class ended, she was back to her diamond state. Because clearly, diamonds were as extraordinary as you could get.

Kennedy walked straight (shut up) up to Drake after class, thumbs hooked into her pockets per habit, eyes narrowed slightly and expression serious.

"So this cheating demony BFF guy we're calling Drake for convenience and the sake of the story and all that, this really is his last-last class, isn't it?"

At the end of class, Karla went over to Drake, placed a single hand over her heart and bowed. "My heart is too full for words," she said quietly, remembering the words she'd read under the instruction on a history tutor, years ago.

"Good form, going out on the George Carlin quote," Didi said, wondering over. "You know what else he said? 'When someone is impatient and says, "I haven't got all day," I always wonder, How can that be? How can you not have all day?'"

She had a point. She was just going at it a little sideways.

Didi was perched at her desk, wondering why she suddenly had the feeling this might be her last class too.

Summer was over.
