The Mathematics of Quantum Neutrino Fields; Tuesday, Period 4 [ 08/03 ].

As the students came into the classroom today, they would find Farnsworth putting the finishing touches on that weird dog picture from last week. On on the top, of course, he had written: "TODAY'S LESSON: WD Witten's Dog"

"Last week," said Farnsworth, "we discussed the Superdupersymmetric String Theory, and, today, we're building on that with the the theory of Witten's Dog. I'm sure you're all familiar with the idea of Schrödinger's cat. Everyone knows Schrödinger's cat, or, at least, they think they do, but then how do they know for sure unless they opened the box? Either way, it attempts to illustrate the incompleteness of the theory of quantum mechanics when going from subatomic to macroscopic systems. Two different realities based on whether or not the cat is dead, which you won't know unless you open the box, in which case you can't say whether it's dead or not unless you opened it. So the cat is both dead and alive, as well as neither, and blah blah blah random event.

"Well, bring Witten's Dog into it and you have an equation that constrains the mass density of neutrinos in the universe, as you can see in this diagram. They are all constrained in the superduper symmetrical string theory as applied to this dog. Thing. Due to the this proof of the positive energy theorem involving spinors in general relativity..."

And here is where it all dispersed into something relatively undiscernable, all words and scientific ones at that, and they probably made sense if you were a genius like Farnsworth himself, especially a mad genius like Farnsworth himself, but was most likely as indiscernable as the diagram on the board.

"Which, of course, leads up to those ever persistant questions on quantum mechanics: if Witten's Dog eats Schrödinger's cat's, is he still hungry? Is his hunger in direct correlation with whether or not the cat is dead? Or, since the cat was just eaten by a dog, is he assumed dead due to being consumed, or is there another reality in which being eaten by a dog does not kill you unless some other random previous event has occurred? If the bully does not put the nerd in the dumpster, does he cease to be a nerd? What about Susie being a cheap floozy? Does smoking a fat joint help make this all make more sense, or it will it simply cause you to become paranoid about the wallpaper coming alive and eating you, though you won't be sure if, while once eaten, you will be alive or dead?"

He turned to the class with an expression on the hopeful side of maniacle. "Let's discuss!"

One would think that by now Claudia would have stopped trying to follow these lectures.

Alas, it was not so.

Kurt took notes as best as he could, but he was pretty sure this guy was completely crazy. Eventually he stopped paying attention and just stared at the blackboard with a glazed look in his eyes.

Also, he started to get hungry for Chinese food and didn't know why.

Hungry. Definitely hungry.

Also, fairly worried that now after three months here, some of this sounded less like free-style noodling on higher math and student mind-warping, and more like something that could actually happen.

Rinoa was mostly doodling cats and dogs in her notebooks, but she caught the Chinese food reference.

Not fair, making her hungry in the middle of class.

Joolushko wasn't hungry for Chinese or any other type of food at the moment. She was mostly just confused, which, along with a desire to research what the topics covered were actually about, was the usual reaction to this workshop.

Kurt raised a hand tentatively. "So... what happened to the cat?"

He was worried about the cat, okay?

Rinoa raised her hand with a very urgent, important point.

"Dogs don't eat cats."

Lindsay felt unlucky everytime she was in this class and wondered what she did wrong to deserve being chosen as a TA. Still, she was there if anyone needed her.

". . . blah blah blah random event."

Best explanation of Schroedinger's Cat ever.
