The Five Senses | Period 1 | Friday | July 30

Today's class had been handwavily informed to meet in the cafeteria. It seemed like the proper place to do a class on tasting. There was one long table with various covered dishes on it. There were also blindfolds, gloves and nose plugs.

"Good morning," he greeted jovially, smiling at the assembled students. "Today is our class on taste. When you think of taste, what immediately comes to mind? Food, right? That's what we tend to mainly use our sense of taste for. We taste food, we savor it, we can tell what it is just from the sensations that we get when it hits our tongue. That's, of course, due to the taste buds on our tongue. They're extraordinarily strong. Our taste buds aren't the only thing we use when eating though. We use our noses to smell the scent, we use our hands to feel the texture. It's a combination of those senses that really tell the brain what you're about to eat."

Fraser smiled again, hands clasped behind his back. This might have been his favorite class so far. "I've tasted dirt before. And no, I wasn't a child. The taste buds in your mouth, like I said, are very strong. If you taste the dirt, you might be able to track someone depending on the condition of the dirt, of course. Taste isn't just used for food. That's its primary use but not its only use. I'm not telling you all to go outside and taste the dirt or lick light poles but, if you do, I can almost guarantee that you're going to pick up some sort of taste that you didn't expect. It might not always be a good taste but you're not going to get sick or ill if you just taste something. If you eat something bad that you've tasted, then you might get sick."

Fraser chuckled and then gestured to the table. "Behind me, you see several things. We're going to see how strong your sense of taste is today. I want you all to put on the blindfolds, the nose plugs and the gloves so it's just going to be you and your sense of taste. And then you're going to do some taste tests. I'll help you move from station to station so you don't fall. Your job is to taste and identify just by tasting. I promise, none of it is going to make you sick. So, go ahead and put everything on and we'll get started."

Christian started with spam.

It .. wasn't bad, actually. Like chewy, bland ham. He'd been fed much worse food. Being raised on British cuisine made Spam positively mundane.

"Is it a sausage?" he guessed. "Some sort of cold, sliced pork thing, I can tell that much."

"I'd eat it," Christian said. "I don't know that I'd go out of my way to track it down, but I wouldn't complain about it, either. it's quite savory, actually."

"A plant of some kind," Firekeeper said, after chewing on on the seaweed for a moment. "Dried. Salty, like ocean?"

Madison was grateful they weren't tasting dirt but she also wasn't looking forward to this lesson.

She played along though and started off with the kung pao chicken. "Mmm, this is some kind of spicy Chinese food," she said.

"The sauce," Madison said. "Or maybe Thai, but I don't think the spices are right for that."

Claudia ended up going for the chocolate ice cream. It was like a sixth sense for chocolate. Yeah.

She took the first bite a little tentatively. Cold, wet, creamy and sweet. "Definitely ice cream."

"Then I'm totally gonna need to try more. Make sure I get it exactly right."

Claudia grinned. "Will do!" And dug right in.

Well... she'd had ice cream before? And lasagna! But not any of the other stuff, no.

Maybe not, but he'd ripped apart a leech with his teeth and he's eaten raw rabbits and deer. Yeah, sometimes it was best not to know these things.
