Contact Sports: Building Character (And Possibly...), Gym, 6th Period [7/28]

Anders looked pretty out of it today; that was the side effect of getting stuck and then lost in Special Collections for a week, only to extricate himself a couple of hours before class.

"Guys, it's been a week," he said, even sounding pretty ragged. "I had big plans to show you another sport from Earth's future but, ah, the library foiled me on digging up any information on that one so I haven't had time to prep anything different. Sorry." He was still sure there was a frakkin' pterodactyl in there somewhere, or what he thought sounded like one anyway.

He indicated the A/V setup near the bleachers, and the balls and equipment laid out in the gym. "So you guys get a free day today. There's like five hundred sports channels that you can check out if you feel like making a movie day out of it instead of heading that way and having open gym day."

As for him, he was going to sit down on the bleachers, practically hugging a cooler of Gatorade all to himself.

Pretty much any sporting equipment that doesn't involve jet packs or weapons or anything that might ~~damage the gym floor~~ be a little too dangerous is available for you to play with.

Or steal. Ariel.

Jason grabbed a basketball from the equipment and practiced making baskets from different distances. It was a nice distraction from thinking about the rest of his classes today.

Let's ignore the fact that, though she'd already had a frisbee and a pair of binoculars from her previous class, she was now eying the pretty bright yellow of fuzzy tennis ball.

It was almost as if the earlier treasures only made her thirst for mooooore.

Or flip through the fifty million ~~moddable~~ sports channels, some not even from this planet.

Be amused at old basketball shorts on ESPN Classic, notice the difference between Triad and sabacc and wonder what either of them is doing on a sports channel anyway . . . hey, are those guys playing underwater?

Henry looked apologetic as he approached Anders after class. "I have to say I'm sorry on behalf of the library," he said. "I would have told Rinoa not to let anyone in if I'd known Special Collections was hungry."

He wondered if Zoe would let him just brick the place off. Probably not.

"Huh?" Anders wasn't usually this slow on the uptake, but he was still pretty out of it, and he blinked blearily at Henry a couple of times. "Oh, right. Hey, man, don't worry about it. I was a student here forever ago; I had friends get lost in there a few times, so I knew what I was getting into."

And brushed it off. Details.

Henry's eyebrows went up in surprise. "And you went in anyhow?"

Seriously. Whole damn place was full of people with death wishes.

Well, given where he lived and all . . .

"I was trying to come up with something special to teach these guys," Anders explained, indicating the gym. "Couldn't find what I was looking for anywhere else."

The man -- or overgrown boy, possibly -- was dedicated to his job when his job involved sports. Maybe too much so.

"It's not her fault," he added, then . . . "Maybe it was frakking with my head, man, but I think there's an orangutan in there."

"Wouldn't surprise me," Henry said. "I found living books and I know there's at least one mad scientist. Probably there's a whole fucking zoo."

He looked Anders over. "Did the place feed you? Or should I try installing a mini-fridge for the next adventurer?"

"Yeah, the crazy pink former headmaster is in there somewhere, I remember. And some old wizard guy who just went in one day way back when, never came back out."

And he'd gone in anyway. Anyone suspecting Anders's mental faculties of being somewhat less than stellar would have every right to do so right now. Look, at least he hadn't gone in search of porn and lost months of his life that way. "I'm eating a five-course dinner by myself when I get home tonight, but I didn't starve," Anders assured him. "Don't ask me to think too hard about some of the stuff I ended up eating."

The tribe of tiny people he'd stumbled across in one row of stacks had fed him rather nicely, even if it took a lot of tiny servings before his stomach stopped growling.

". . . the handwritten journal by some guy whose name I don't know, but it wasn't Robinson, with all the notes about surviving a shipwreck on a deserted island for years -- that ended up bein' pretty useful."

Look, Anders's grasp on Thirteenth Colony geography was tenuous, but he was still fairly sure he shouldn't have found ostrich eggs in the same section of Special Collections as the penguins. No, he didn't eat the penguins. Gods.

By the time Anders was done explaining, Henry was ready to brick Special Collections up himself. Well, either brick it up or just toss a Moloto Cocktail back in there, he wasn't feeling especially fussy.

"... there's a shipwreck back in there?" he repeated, then laughed. He'd hold off on destruction. Maybe it would be better to explore. "Anders, do you ever get to missing being the weirdest thing in the room?"

"I've never been the weirdest thing in the room," said poor unsuspecting Anders with a chuckle of his own. "So I wouldn't know what it is to miss it. Do have to say I miss being regular ol' me after the last week."

He scratched at a spot behind his ear. "I didn't actually see the shipwreck. Nice bit of beach, though."

"So it was like a very strange, unexpected vacation," Henry said, trying for levity. "Except ... not that at all."

He moved to clap Anders on the shoulder. "I'm happy regular ol' you got out. I was starting to wonder if I should file a missing persons report."

"Ah, thanks, man. Didn't mean to worry anyone. You'd have had to deal with a cranky demon demanding to know what happened to me if I'd been gone much longer, first," Anders mused, "so it's a good thing I got out when I did."

For both of them.

"Wasn't bad, actually. Really took me back to my student days." One should not sound quite so nostalgic about getting trapped in the library for a week. It made disclaimers of being normal sound suspect.

"And somehow people who graduate from here go home and function in their societies," Henry said, almost about to leave. Then he decided he had to ask the question itching at his brain.

"... literally, a cranky demon?"

It was a preposterous notion, wasn't it?

"Literally. Boyfriend," Anders said by way of possibly too casual explanation. "Not evil, though."

"Oh, well," Henry said. "Then that's okay."

He was going to take the casual tone and run with it and not look back.

"Let me know if I can help you with any future research projects, okay?"

Run, Henry! Run fast!

"Next time, I'll check in first," Anders answered, saluting jauntily.

". . . and bring a backpack in with me."

"I'll stick some dried fruit and peanut butter crackers on the shelves just inside the entrance," Henry said, returning the salute with a wave. "See you around, Anders."

Crazy last few days + brainfail == sort of a movie day and my sincerest apologies for it.
