Heroes v Villains | Period 1 | Wednesday | July 28

The class was meeting in the Danger Shop today for a class Loki had been looking forward to for a few reasons. He enjoyed both annoying his students and making them think and he hoped this class would do both while also being more than just discussion.

"Today, we're talking about crime," he started, crossing his arms. "Most of you know what crime is or, at least, have a definition of crime. In the simplest of terms, crime is an action that breaks a law. Simple. It's not always that cut and dry though. Crimes can be committed for a variety of reasons and it's not always right to label someone criminal or villain or anything like that just because they broke a law. You sure as fuck don't know why they broke a law, do you?"

He stopped and glanced at each student. "If you went and stole a loaf of bread from the store because your family is starving, you've committed a crime but the reason behind it should be considered, shouldn't it? What if your husband or wife is beating the shit out of you and, while defending yourself, you kill him or her? You've taken a life but if you didn't, you would have probably been killed yourself. The reasons behind the crimes, they're not always considered. There are always exceptions to the rules but, generally, a criminal is a criminal. People think in black and white and shunt criminals into one large group. They have difficulty getting jobs, getting credit, getting fucking respect all because they wanted to feed their family or protect their children or something else. Where the fuck is the logic in that?"

He paused again just to get his breath, gather his thoughts. "Now, I'm not always saying that people have good reasons for committing crimes. Some people are just fucking jackholes. Some people want to steal for material gain and some people want to kill because it gives them a thrill. Crimes do birth villains. Crimes are sometimes committed because people just want to be bad. They're just fuckers. They're just evil. And sometimes they're not. Sometimes that criminal is a fucking hero to the family they fed or to the kids they saved from violence. Stop fucking generalizing. Look beyond the crime. Find the reason."

And when he realized he was starting to sound philosophical, he pursed his lips and laughed. "For today's activity, you're all going to fucking jail."

The sim started to reveal the dank and dark interior of a large jail cell. "There are prison jumpsuits that you need to put on and then into the cell, all of you. Once you're in there, I want you to pull out the piece of paper that's in the pocket of your jumpsuit. On it, there's a crime that you've committed with reasoning. I want you to tell me if you deserve to be let out of that jail cell because you committed a crime for heroic reasons. Convince me. Sound good? Go."

Well, this was... cozy, Jono supposed. Granted, hanging out in a prison cell wasn't normally his idea of a good time, but at least it was only a simulation.

He found himself a spot in the corner to crouch down and mull over this fate, as temporary as it might be.

The simulated jail wasn't too bad. It wasn't filthy and disgusting, at least. Raven settled cross-legged on the floor and decided to just meditate (though she was interruptable if anyone wished to speak to her).

Really, the thing that amused her the most was the fact that, even if it was just for class, that she was on the other side of the bars for once.

Rosalind leaned against a wall and looked unconcerned about their surroundings and the situation at hand.

Kate was just going to tap her nails against the bars. Clink, clink, clink.

Waiting was boring, and she'd been in far worse simuated situations.

Azula didn't like this activity, after four years of this you'd think she'd be used to this. But she could sit, she could wait. She could just be here.

Jason had spent a number of years dodging juvie, so being in the cell hit surprisingly close to home. If he hadn't met Bruce, he might have ended up here for real. That was what he knew Bruce thought, at least. For now, Jason was able to feel confident that that wasn't his future anymore.

Karla read her 'crime' and started snickering. If she was going to construct an elaborate tale of why she shaved another female's head, at least she had an excellent victim in mind.

Luke could easily just break out of real jail, but at the moment he was content to just sit around and zone out until someone or something caught his attention.

The hideousness of the jumpsuit Sara could forgive for the exciting prospect of getting to go to jail at least temporarily, and thereby give some of her tales an additional authentic touch.

She was, once she got a good look at the inside of the jail cell, horrendously disappointed. She'd expected moss in the cracks between the stones and flickering torches, perhaps a skeleton chained to the wall. Not this.

"Oh," she exclaimed in a tone of profound dismay, "this is so much less interesting than I thought it would be."

This jail was a whole lot nicer than the last one he'd been in.

Squall hung out against the wall and waited.

Jono nearly laughed as he pulled his scenario out of his pocket and gave it a look over.

//I think it's important to clarify before we begin, mate,// he said, looking up at Loki with a raised eyebrow, //if this is me burning those trees, or if this is a hypothetical involving anybody.//

Because yes, it made one hell of a difference.

These roleplaying things were terribly confusing for Raven. "If I committed a crime, then I should be punished," she said, frowning. "And if I were to cover up evidence for something, I would not set a dangerous fire. I would merely transport it to the netherverse."

You know, with the giant lizard.

Rosalind's eyebrows arched at her crime.

"Was it my high heel?" she asked, amused. "Or was it the victim's?"

A pause.

"I would like that clarified," Rosalind added. "That was not part of my defense."
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

Kate raised a brow at reading her piece of paper. Another week, another assigned boyfriend and cheating thing. Okay then. She'd go with it.

There was an important question to be asked, first.

"Just how badly did I vandalize the car to land in jail for it?"

"Where am I going to be of the best use to society?" Emma asked, folding her arms. "Working some barely-minimum wage job? Sitting in jail? Or getting an education?"

"I'm ambitious, intelligent, and creative. I'm also a self-emancipated minor. I'm not running cons to go on lavish vacations on tropical islands, as lovely as that sounds. I'm trying to make something better for myself, since it's not like I can take out a school loan with no credit."

"That," she said, her tone part disbelieving and part disgusted, "Is why I'm in jail?"

Said the girl who ruined a whole house to get back at a boy who dumped her. Still, it was a let down from 'war crimes' to 'petty crime'.
