Class was back in session and Loki had mostly recovered from his Bartleby visit this weekend. It actually made today's class topic a little more significant considering the circumstance. At least Bartleby wasn't around to smack him in the head.

"So, who in here is a traitor?" he asked right off, not expecting any hands at that. "Of course, who's going to fucking admit to betrayal, right? No one wants to admit that. Traitor is a word that is immediately and sometimes deservedly linked with negativity. If you're a traitor, that's what you're going to be remembered for despite anything else you might do in your life. Sad facts."

He shrugged and saved his story for the last part. "Benedict Arnold is one famous traitor. That douchebag was an American general who took command of a fort at West Point so he could surrender it to the British. When that didn't work, he defected to the British side. And that's what he's remembered for. No one remember that he captured Fort Ticonderoga or key actions during the Battle of Saratoga. And no one remembers that he captured Richmond after defecting. Why? Because he committed fucking treason. One act in the middle of a slew of heroic acts has made him a villain. This fucker is demonized. Why? Because he was looking out for himself? Fuck that shit, man. I'd do same thing. Sometimes you gotta make fucking hard choices."

Loki paused again and leaned against his desk. "It's okay to think of traitors as bad people because they are. They've betrayed someone but to utterly demonize them? To make them a villain? I think you'd want to look at the overall picture here. I'm sure most of you have betrayed someone or something at one point or another. Maybe not on as grand a scale as Benedict Arnold but you have. You've cheated on your significant other, you've cheated on a test, you've sold someone out, or any number of other things. Have you been demonized and ostracized for that? Probably fucking not. You probably had reasons for whatever you did and you could explain them if someone asked you WHY. With traitors, people infrequently asked them why. The action is made, the label is placed and fuck their history, it doesn't matter anymore. They're bastards through and through."

Here, Loki smiled at them but it wasn't all too happy of a smile. "Wanna know who else is a traitor? Me. I am. If you don't already know it, I'm an angel. A fucking real life angel and if you wanna see my wings, I'll show you. I was employed by God and was the Angel of Death for a long fucking time. Then, I fell. Long story. I didn't particularly like it so me and another angel devised a plan to get back into heaven. It meant going against God and God's will and destroying fucking humankind. I went along with it for awhile. I didn't care about you guys, I wanted to get back into heaven. So, that made me a fucking traitor. Am I villain now? I'm still alive. God gave me a fucking second chance despite my betrayal. I've done shit that you people can't even imagine all for God. One blip on my resume and most people automatically think I'm a fuckup. Look at the bigger picture here and judge people by their lives, not by one fucking betrayal."

It was apparently a day to babble. Loki paused though and took a breath. "Activity for today, I'm going to label you all with a betrayal of some kind. You're a traitor in big ways or small ways. It's your job to try and convince me that you shouldn't be judged by this one action. Got it? Go."

... Oh right. Yeah. Kate had heard about the angel thing before, she just hadn't known it was Loki. That was... new. But at least it explained some things. And all the cursing still kind of made her feel at home.

She was just going to ignore the God part of things.

Jason wasn't sure if he believed Loki's story about being an angel, but he'd heard crazier tales. Of course, that would mean accepting the idea of God, and that was something he wasn't ready for just yet.

No, one act didn't define a person, but... someone who'd done it once might do it again.

He wasn't really sure how to process the whole "angel" thing, so he made a note of it and moved on.

Her actual boyfriend was really kind of wonderful, after all. And it felt kind of weird to even talk about this kind of betrayal.

It was times like this that Karla was fairly certain Loki knew more than he let on.

"This government was corrupt and wrong," she said. "I feel no shame in what I did--in fact, I'm proud, of both my actions and the actions of those who stood with me. This government took power through murder and usurpation and we, the true patriots, decided it was high time to bring back a government based on law and justice, not abuse and willful cruelty."
