Practical Crisis Problem Solving - Danger Shop, Tuesday, Period 3 (11am-12pm)

Oh look, still no exotic locations. The students walking through the Danger Shop doors found themselves in the library. Yes, that library. It was empty aside from the Doctor who was sitting on the collections desk, legs swinging over the edge. There were a few lamps on around the library and moonlight coming in the windows, suggesting it was late at night in here rather than 11am like it was outside.

Once everyone was gathered and the doors were closed, the Doctor leapt off the desk. "Sometimes," the Doctor started, pacing around in the well-lit areas, "you end up somewhere you're not expecting to be. Happens to me all the time. For some of you, even being here is somewhere you're not expecting to be. Wait. Sorry." He paused. "I forgot to say hello. Hello! Very rude of me. As I was saying, you don't always expect to walk head first into a problematic situation. Usually you won't be the only one there. Sometimes you'll be able to leave when others can't.

You have a choice." He looked around at them. "Fight or flight. You could take your leave, walk out and that's a perfectly reasonable solution to the problem. Of course, you'll be leaving everyone else to their own fate. Or you could always choose to stay, putting your life in immediate danger, but you could find out what's going on and help the people around you. Your choice. Make it now."

"From your wording, it sounds like you are," Karla said steadily. "Just the way the options were phrased. They may be both 'perfectly valid' but they were still put forward as leaving, which means you're abandoning everyone and staying, which means you're willing to stay and help at personal risk."

She looked away. "All I'm saying is that people may have reasons for leaving that go beyond simple self-preservation."

"You're applying your own morals to the situation. I stated the facts. If you leave, you are, in fact, leaving everyone to their fate. I didn't imply why anyone would leave. Maybe it's for their own personal gain. Maybe it's to regroup and live to fight another day or find another way in. Staying could be for selfish reasons too. Or stupidity. Go apply your morals to solving the problem. Morals are good when you need them. But don't try telling me I'm being unfair because your own experiences are colouring your assessment of the situation. You'll know when I'm being unfair. I give you the facts. Everything else is on you." Someone in the room was tetchy today and he had two hearts.

That was fine. Someone else was also tetchy today. And she had a tension headache he was only making worse. "Perhaps you may wish to give more thought to what you say and how you phrase it then," Karla said through gritted teeth, not backing down. "I'm not denying that I'm bringing my own morality to the table by taking exception to yours. But that doesn't mean that your phrasing was morally neutral, either."

"You keep repeating yourself," the Doctor pointed out. "There are better ways of trying to convince other people that you're right, even when you're not. Work on them." And with that, and with his flair for the dramatic at times, he walked away to check on the progress of the generator, thinking that one day teachers would get a bit more respect.

Of course, he reasoned, one day a lot of teachers would get thrown into a volcano too, but he didn't necessarily want that.

"Neither does flouncing away!" Karla retorted to his retreating back, before flouncing away her own self spinning about on her heel and going back to the scenario.
