Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 07/19 ].

Today was a very exciting day in the outrageous world of home ec! Today was cooking! Plus, Aquaman was back to his usual, chipper self, thanks to not being hungover and having spent an oh-so-conveniently-timed weekend back home in Atlantis to attend his son's dolphin polo match.

This was also a class that made Aquaman glad that he was the one teaching it. Not that he wanted to sound skeptical of his students skills, especially since nothing was charred last semester, but he was glad this was all going to happen under the watchful eye of someone who could easily manipulate water to put out flames.

"Hello, my adventurous academics!" As mentioned, the usual Aquaman vigor was back, but there was something new to his usual attair. Over his iconic orange shirt and the green tights, he wore a very nice apron. And, in his hands, he held ready a spatula and a whisk. "I hope you've got your culinary creativity ready today, because we'll be working on cooking! Food is essential to our survival, and it can also contribute greatly to our happiness! There are few things as satisfying and simple as providing a well-prepared, well-balanced meal for your loved ones!"

He set down the spatula, took up a marker, and turned to the dry erase board:

"Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all! --Harriet Van Horne"

Proudly, he turned back to the classroom. "As long as you try, even if what you come up with is inedible, it was still made with love and that's what counts!"

Apparently, according to Aquaman, you could sustain yourself on love and good intentions alone. Of course, he had yet to sample any of his students' cooking...

"We will be partnering up for this activity, my young chefs, because preparing food can be a great activity to do with others. Bonding with baking! Comaradarie with cooking! So, find a friend to work with and then come get from me your black boxes! You won't know what ingredients are within until you get them, but, once you do, you must go through and plan three courses of a meal around those ingedients: a starter, a main course, and a delectable dessert! After you've put together your menu, attempt to make what you can! Since we have limited time, you are only expected to try one part of your menu, but if you can do more, by all means!"

"As we get toward the end of class, we will share whatever of our dishes might be finished. If you're feeling a little stuck, I've brought in some fine cookbooks to help!"

With that, Aquaman took up his mighty spatula again. "So pair up and bon apetit, ravenous little renegate! Let's eat!"

Is your stomach rumbling with anticipation to show off your culinary skills? Or is it grumbling with foreknowledge of your lack thereof?

Cara did not look particularly happy at the idea of cooking. But then, after this weekend she wouldn't have looked happy at the idea of anything.

The only thing that was unusual about the idea of cooking was the teacher, which meant that Hinata was smiling slightly as she listened to the lecture.

Of course Jonothon knew that this lesson was coming. He did.

He didn't look any more pleased about the prospect of making a meal that he couldn't eat just because he expected this class to happen, of course.

Oh well. He'd cook, and he'd bloody well make himself enjoy it. So there.

Alex was a bit amused by this lecture. She had a feeling her mom would say the same thing about cooking if she were here.

Kate was looking a little thoughtful when class started, but all her thoughts were pushed aside for observing Aquaman. This was the first time she'd seen him not hungover, after all. It was... interesting.

She wasn't sure which version she found more disturbing, honestly.

Food!

Del liked food. Maybe now she could create some of the food that should exist.

Medusalith wondered if the quote on the board explained the debacle with the uncooked fish flesh at the restaurant when she'd gone out with Blackagar. Perhaps the cook had no love for his craft and had decided the better part of valor was to do no cooking at all. Humans were so overdramatic.

She had no idea how to cook, but she was confident in her ability to improvise.

Partner up and get cooking! Aquaman will present you with a box of mystery ingredients, or you can mod your own.

If anyone wanted a grumpy partner who as a cook made a brilliant wood-cutter...Cara was there.

Grumpy, in this case, seemed to seek out like company. And so it was a cranky Jonothon who approached Cara with his arms over his chest, presenting her with a total deadpan.

//I don't eat. I'll help with th'assignment, but we'll cook whatever you choose, or else it'll be a bloody waste.//

Jono was thoughtful, that way.

"I think we could cook something that can be eaten raw." She was very aware that cooking was not one of her strengths.

That statement earned a raised eyebrow from Jono, and a bemused tone crept into his voice.

//Bowl of cold cereal, piece of toast?//

Okay, so the toast had to be toasted, but it was sort of difficult to screw up with a toaster.

"Or winterberries, or Shadrin liver." Not that there were any Shadrin handy to be killed and de-livered. "Are we allowed to start a fire for toast in here?" Someone still hadn't gotten the hang of modern appliances.

Jono took a moment to consider that, glancing toward the teacher for a moment. Considering Aquaman's whole... scaly fish... thing, Jono didn't doubt for a moment that either the teacher could handle a fire if it got out of hand, or else he was insane enough not to care about it in the first place.

//... We better stick to using a toaster, luv.// As tempting as burning things was, and all. //Yer not from around here, I'm going to guess.//

The Shadrin thing was his first hint. Whatever that was.

Cara was a bit fan of burning things, especially when she was in a bad mood. "No, I'm not."

Jono, on the other hand, wasn't necessarily a fan of burning things. He was just naturally very good at it, regardless. Go figure.

//A toaster... Toasts bread. Without fire,// he explained, shrugging. //I suppose if there isn't one in the classroom, we could use a frying pan and do it up on the stove. Maybe put a piece of cheese between, make yerself a sandwich, or something. That counts as cooking, after all.//

And if you couldn't handle a grilled cheese sandwich, there was probably little hope for you.

She glanced around for a partner, mildly hopeful that this would go alright--Hinata knew she could cook, but there was a good chance her partner might not and that would make things rather more interesting.

"Food!"

Brace yourself for impact, Hinata. In Delirium's opinion, the girl looked like she should be one fine cook, so maybe she could help with the green telephone ice cream project.

"What should we, um, cook?" First she would play innocent.

Hinata laughed, not put off by Delirium's presence at all. "Did you have anything in mind?" she asked, smiling. "Have you cooked before?"

It was good to know!

Laugh was good! People should laugh more often around her.

"Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I've never really, un, cooked; I don't need to eat." It tasted good anyway, but when there wasn't food? Then there wasn't. Plain and simple. "Do you know?" She looked like she did; Del was good with knowing what people could do. Hinata looked like she knew a lot of handy things, and cooking was handy, if you ever needed to eat.

"You look like you know."

"I do know," she said, amused and curious all at the same time. "I cannot cook anything particularly fancy, but I know how to do most things people eat every day. You... don't need to eat?"

"I don't eat! " How could she explain Hinata she was some sort of anthropomorphic representation of insanity? "I'm the anthropomorphic representation of, um, insanity." There was an idea.

"Can you, eh, make....ice cream?"

Chuck could cook! Sort of.

He was in no way in the realm of good at that sort of thing as Ellie, but between them they'd been feeding themselves for a while, and you picked up enough to get by, so... This shouldn't be too bad.

Provided he didn't go all klutz the moment someone decided they wanted to partner up with him.

Aquaman doesn't believe in the word 'failure!' Present the end results of assignment and dig into the fruits of your classmate's labors!

...Or not.
