Battlefield Tactics, Thursday

This time, the students' visit to the Danger Shop would reveal a teacher. Kerrigan stood atop a rock, her arms crossed and her bearing very, very steady. "This is a practical course," she said. "Nobody's going to teach you how to run an army in seven easy steps, so I hope that's not what you had in mind when you joined us here."

She raked her eyes over the kids. "Practicals," she said. "The goal is for you to start thinking creatively through experience." A pause. "Or something like that. You, and you. You, you..." She pointed at a few random students, pairing them up one with the other. "Team up. On the other side of this ridge is a small army. We have higher ground, they've got numbers. Near the back of their encampment, against this very same rock, is their food supply."

"You're all outnumbered. So the trick is to starve your enemy. It's going to be hard for them to find another way out of this valley and set up a steady supply route. You've got some Danger Shop explosives to take care of the whole thing, but don't abuse the Danger Shop safeties."

One more glance their way.

"Now go."

Zack pursed his lips a little while he listened to the instructions. He was fairly certain that the point of this exercise wasn't to breeze in and take down every last man in the army the way that he'd done in Fort Tamblin...

... But that would have been pretty fun, too!

She really wasn't up for getting yelled at again this week; not in person, anyhow. For now, Kennedy would just keep her mouth shut and listen to the instructions.

Starving them out, huh? That seemed kind of... huh.

Ben's mind ran through the various possibilities, stopping a moment to wonder if blowing them all up might be more humane than letting them starve.

Karla wasn't sure how she felt about this assignment. It was one thing to go up against enemies in battle, another to sit and watch them die. And she doubted all of the people in that army were there because they wanted to be, or because they believed they were in the right. Odds were, most of them were there because they had to be.

On the other hand, it meant keeping more of her people alive, too.

In the end, it didn't really matter, did it? Being a Queen meant making tough choices.

There was something with battle-oriented courses and not wanting them to engage in real battles.

But a patience game? He could play that.

...Admittedly, beating the crap out of everyone would have been a lot more exciting.

All right! Infiltration and explosions! Zack could totally get on-board with this!

He grinned and did a few squats while he waited for his partner. This would be a piece of cake! Probably!

[Posted with a warning that I'm only going to be around early in the day, and then I'll be off and skipping to AFK-land for the next four days, woe.]

Karla looked around for a partner. She had skills and gifts that would make infiltrating the camp that much easier, but her handle on explosives was weak at best.

The serious blonde. Two serious blondes?

"What are you good for?" It was a completely professional question. He would have preferred to team up with Zack, but then again, they both did pretty much the same.

"My charming personality," Karla said dryly, giving Cloud a small half-grin. But it faded quickly. "I have Craft and a lot of it. I can make us invisible, inaudible, and keep us walking on air so we don't leave a trail and don't have to worry about terrain. I can fight and Heal, I can call fire, and I can vanish and call things in, so we don't have to worry about lugging our equipment the entire way. My shields can withstand bullets up to a certain caliber and I've got a bunch of nasty tricks up my sleeve."

The tiny smile returned as she asked, "What are you good for?"

"Magic." There was no snark nor disdain; he was just resuming it all in one word. There are some things money can't buy. for everything else, there's Mastercardmagic; actually, there was probably magic for everything at all. And Karla apparently was good on the multitasking zone. Good, a sword-less, materia-less Cloud was not as versatile as he would like to be.

"I fight", and there was no shame on his voice. When you didn't have much skills, you better be the best on what you did. "I could probably end the army down there by myself if I had my sword on me. And I also happen to have military training. My personality might not play on my favor though."

Momoko was not going to enjoy this class, she could already tell.

Okay, so they were at war and they were outnumbered, but they had the advantage in location? Good. She remembered from Tactics class that sometimes the smaller the group you were in, the better, so she wasn't too worried about that.

She was focussed instead on the idea of destroying food and forcing people to starve to death. She didn't like that idea, and wondered if she and her partner could maybe come up with a different way for the two of them to defeat an entire army bent on killing them.

"Will they surrender, if they get hungry enough?" Karla asked. "If I come down with an offer of food, I mean? Or if I announce that defectors to my army will be given food and water?" She looked out over the army in the valley. "It seems pointless to let them all die."

"Funny how starvation erodes loyalty at times," Karla said. "Especially when they weren't particularly loyal to begin with. But I wouldn't trust them on just their word alone. I have other methods of determining motive and intent."
