fandomhigh | Beaching It [Week 2, Period 5, Wed. 7/14]

Since there was a strong chance for thunderstorms, John had handwavily informed the class to put on their bathing suits and meet in the Danger Shop this week. He'd set the computer to give them Galactica Point under the most pristine conditions possible - cloudless sky, bright sun, warm air, and a fantastic water temperature. He took a seat on the sand in his shorts, sunglasses keeping his eyes nice and safe from squinting at his students.

"Looks like bad weather can't stop us from hanging out on the beach! It's a good thing since today you're gonna learn about sunscreen." John held up a bottle of Banana Boat SPF 15. "Sunscreen is one of the few Earth items that is it's name. It's a lotion or spray or gel that screens the bad rays of the sun from the skin you apply it to. I use this one 'cause it smells like coconut. There's a whole bunch of numbers assigned and I read online that SPF - that stands for Sun Protection Factor - is really kind of insane to follow. Most doctors suggest an SPF between 15 and 30 with regular reapplication if you want it to work and your skin not to burn. Oh, and burning means get red, hot, and really uncomfortable. Trust me. I worked with this guy who developed his own sunscreen and - yeah, you probably don't care how bad it smelled or what he looked like with it on. Nevermind. So anyhow, I've talked, let's get to the fun part!"

The fun part appeared via Danger Shop magic as a table covered with pamphlets that were way more informative than John could provide and dozens upon dozens of bottles and tubes and spraycans of sunscreen.

"I love how it does that," John grinned, so impressed with technology that responded to a snap of his fingers. "Okay, so what you're gonna do here is take some sunscreen and put it on yourself or even more interestingly, help out someone else in class. Any exposed skin should get covered so if your hands don't reach...you just might want to phone a friend. Then and only then can you hit the water or lay out. I'll be over here if you need any help!"

"She's your friend, go ask her," John suggested, voice flattening just a little with the unexpected question.

Rose glanced over at him. "She already told me what she thought."

John sighed, knowing how different Jaina's version probably painted him and really finding it hard to care. "Look, I'm not the guy she thinks I am. I can't be all about her anymore. I needed space and it turns out she can't handle space so I got the whole island."

"I'm not gonna yell at you for being mean to my friend or anything," she said, kind of wishing there was a way she could fix it. "Just in case you were worried you'd have to deal with it. Just sucks you both are in the same place again, and everything breaks."

Not that those were Rose's issues talking there or anything.

"Good for not yelling, but everything breaks in Fandom," John pointed out pretty honestly. "If I'd never come for homecoming...well, who knows where things would be." He'd probably not have caused the deaths of millions. That would've been nice.

"Cause of the weird time thing?" she checked. She shrugged. "Everything breaks everywhere. I don't think it's just Fandom. And here there's a beach."

"Yup." There was more weird time than John could account for. "And see, the beach is awesome. No one really appreciates just hanging out and doing nothing these days." Hard to believe this guy actually managed to date Jaina, huh?

"Hey, watch what you're talking about there," she protested. "My whole plan for the summer is hanging out and doing nothing."

Except when it conflicted with training or her field experience or getting to go back to St. Vlad's and trying to catch up or...

But the fact that he and the girl Rose had to convince to relax enough to get a pedicure had dated for whatever weird amount of time it was? Totally, weird.

"Right, that's why you've got radio and that job thing and the boyfriend," John teased. "I'm sure your summer'll get with the program right quick."

Rose shrugged, making a face at him. "Hey, they're all things I want to do. It's my life, not someone else's. So it feels like nothing."

John laughed, "I approve of your use of do."

She smirked over at him. "You would."

"Hey, your gay cowboy probably likes it to," John said, snickering a bit. He could be such a teenager sometimes.

"Probably?" Rose pointed out, making a face at him. "Hey, at least me and Chuck Bass don't share one night stands."

"Hey, it's not a new occurance," John informed her. "But at least I got there first this time." He should not be smirking.

"...oh god, it's happened before?" she said disbelievingly. "When? And who?"

"Well, there were a couple really weird weekends? And basically all those wonky realities people fall into? It's been kind of a anyone you can do, I can do better situation," John admitted. "I'm kinda waiting for him to hook up with Jaina."

Alternatively Rose could hook up with John given her previous relationship with Chuck, but that was so definitely never going to happen.

"Suddenly I'm looking at you both in a whole new light," she teased. "Couldn't see Jaina and Chuck though. He's too much of a jackass."

"Yeah, Chuck's the guy I would've been if I hadn't rebelled and gotten mostly disowned and rejected the whole family money thing," John shared. "It's kinda creepy."

"You'd be inheriting like half of New York?" Rose asked, tilting her head as she saw John in a whole new light. "That's - huh, okay, yeah, creepy."

"Dad's a utilities mogul," John shrugged. "Really creepy. I prefer my role in the USAF, thanks." No matter that he'd died twice and been turned into a bug once and trapped for six months in an electricity-free commune.

It was amazing how much more Rose liked John after hearing this news. "Who wouldn't?" she pointed out. Then smirked. "Even though if you'd stayed at home, you could've hung out on the beach all the damn time and not made excuses to teach a class on it."

"Rose, if I'd stayed at home, I'd have ended up wearing a suit and tie and working six days a week doing stuff I hated." The face he made at this thought was pretty awful. "At least till everyone in the family died and I could pawn it off on someone else.

She shuddered. Obviously she'd been hanging Adrian and his conception of family wealth for too long. "Fuck that shit. I'm crap at taking orders, and I'd join the military too."

"Damn straight," John agreed happily.
