Beaching It [Week 2, Period 5, Wed. 7/14]

Since there was a strong chance for thunderstorms, John had handwavily informed the class to put on their bathing suits and meet in the Danger Shop this week. He'd set the computer to give them Galactica Point under the most pristine conditions possible - cloudless sky, bright sun, warm air, and a fantastic water temperature. He took a seat on the sand in his shorts, sunglasses keeping his eyes nice and safe from squinting at his students.

"Looks like bad weather can't stop us from hanging out on the beach! It's a good thing since today you're gonna learn about sunscreen." John held up a bottle of Banana Boat SPF 15. "Sunscreen is one of the few Earth items that is it's name. It's a lotion or spray or gel that screens the bad rays of the sun from the skin you apply it to. I use this one 'cause it smells like coconut. There's a whole bunch of numbers assigned and I read online that SPF - that stands for Sun Protection Factor - is really kind of insane to follow. Most doctors suggest an SPF between 15 and 30 with regular reapplication if you want it to work and your skin not to burn. Oh, and burning means get red, hot, and really uncomfortable. Trust me. I worked with this guy who developed his own sunscreen and - yeah, you probably don't care how bad it smelled or what he looked like with it on. Nevermind. So anyhow, I've talked, let's get to the fun part!"

The fun part appeared via Danger Shop magic as a table covered with pamphlets that were way more informative than John could provide and dozens upon dozens of bottles and tubes and spraycans of sunscreen.

"I love how it does that," John grinned, so impressed with technology that responded to a snap of his fingers. "Okay, so what you're gonna do here is take some sunscreen and put it on yourself or even more interestingly, help out someone else in class. Any exposed skin should get covered so if your hands don't reach...you just might want to phone a friend. Then and only then can you hit the water or lay out. I'll be over here if you need any help!"

"Stay still," he chided, rubbing that lotion in small circles against her lower back. "Not a big pool goer back home? Water parks? You guys got those?"

"Got a lake." Near enough. "Pools... Usually kind of crowded for my taste." They had people (usually small children) in. She was never going to be into that.

"But I like the water. Being out there..." She shrugged a little again, despite his request not to wriggle. "Relaxing."

"Don't move," he said and smacked her back lightly before moving up to her shoulders.

Leaning over her shoulder so he could smirk at her, he asked, "Ever gone skinny dipping, then? I would think so but you're so tame, I might be wrong."

Effy turned her head to shoot him a look, but stopped fidgeting.

"Not something I make a habit of. Fucking cold." If you tried it in England it was, anyway. Which yes, she had. He might gather that from her non-answer. "Have you?"

"It's fucking hot in Iowa," he told her, raising his eyebrows. "Of course I have. It's the best way to swim. And you --"

He slid one hand down one of her arms and smirked again. "You'd need a lot of sunscreen for it. I do an all right job with that?"

"Find out when I have handprints burnt into my back, I guess," she remarked, glancing over her shoulder at him again.

"Almost think you'd do that for the hell of it."

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I'd trace my name in your back," he said, snickering. "Much more creative than a freaking handprint. Wanna do me now?"

Effy held a hand out over her shoulder for the suncream in response. It was her turn.

"So possessive." Did seem to end up writing his name on her, and vice-versa, more often than you'd think was normal. Probably wouln't like the implication, but it was true enough that she was saying it anyway.

"Says the girl who didn't want me lotioning other girls up," he said, dropping the sunscreen into her hand and turning around so she could get at his back. "Pot, meet the fucking kettle."

That... was only completely true, but Effy shrugged casually anyway and rearranged herself on her knees."You've got good hands," she said, as she squeezed out some lotion, and she was rather they were on her.

"Why let someone else benefit?" Liked to hold on when she had a good thing.

"That sounds pretty damn possessive to me," he said, glancing over his shoulder at her. "You don't wanna share your toys and let someone else benefit from my hands. Possessive."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Called looking out for yourself," she corrected, smoothing her hands over his shoulderblades. "Being greedy." Possessive was one she'd throw on him, but would not admit to being herself. One rule for her, one for anyone else.

"So, what makes me possessive and you greedy?" Alex asked, leaning back into her hands a bit and shaking his head. "Double standard. You're not that different from everyone else."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Putting your name on someone? That's a pretty strong statement." Moreso than just grabbing hold of the chance to have someone's hands on you. Yep. "For everyone to see."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't put my name on you to claim you," he said, shaking his head. "I'd put my name on you to fucking piss you off. I'm not possessive."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"... If you say so." Because he'd been just fine seeing her kiss someone else. Completely okay.

"Promise not to go into that to annoy." Not that she thought it would do much. He was already pretty tanned without any of this.

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"You really think I'm possessive?" he asked, glancing back at her. "Because me wanting to put my name in sunscreen on your back? That's bullshit. It takes more than that."

Ignore that he...maybe had done more than that.

"It does," she agreed idly, teasingly making out some shapes with one finger on his back before she smoothed them over again.

Effy leaned in a little closer as she ran her hands over his shoulders. "There's a reason we got into all this, remember." This being the exclusive side of their... thing. It wasn't her who'd gone off on one, seeing him with someone else.

Alex actually got a little tense when he realized what she was alluding to and had to work at not turning around and glaring at her.

"Blaming me for taking away all your fun?" he asked, staring straight ahead now. "Own it, then, Effy."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Effy lost the battle against rolling her eyes, not that he could see it. "I don't do shit if I don't want to do it." So it wasn't blame, she was just making her point. That had been the impetus put that change into motion.

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
Alex didn't apologize but he did shake his head. "If you really think I'm that possessive, do something about it. I'm not stopping you."

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Not trying to change you." Like hell anything like that would take even if she wanted to try. "Just teasing. Remember that, don't you?"

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, sure," he replied after a moment, bowing his head and closing his eyes. He still wasn't apologizing. "I'm not fucking possessive."

There were implications in there that she probably wouldn't see (and wouldn't think about) that made him understandably uncomfortable with the word.

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] pastmewrong.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Effy might not fully understand his discomfort with the word, but she could feel the tension in his posture and the muscles of his neck, and leaned forward, chest against his back, to murmur a, "Relax," in his ear. "At least try." Suncream application wasn't designed to tense him up.

Re: Activity [B2]

[identity profile] fratboybitch.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm trying," he said and did, in fact, try to let some of the tension in his neck and shoulders wash away. The tension did dissipate somewhat, enough that his posture relaxed a bit and he wasn't quite so on edge.

"I'm relaxed," he continued and leaned back against her, nodding. "There."
