The Five Senses | Period 1 | Friday | July 9

Fraser quite liked having the first class of the day. It meant he got to see the students before anyone else and he got to instill his knowledge before anyone else. He liked knowing that he'd be the first to teach them on Fridays. Today, they were meeting in a regular classroom but that probably wouldn't last.

"Good morning," Fraser said, addressing the class politely. "Welcome to The Five Sense, I'm Constable Benton Fraser. I see some familiar faces and some not so familiar faces but I welcome all of you. If you're here, you'd like to either fine tune or learn how to use each of your five senses. In most of my experience, people tend to rely too heavily on one or two of their senses. They see when they should listen, they touch when they should hear, they smell when they should see. There could be many reasons for that reliance. A past experience might have told them that using one sense is the best way to go, they might not see how using a different sense will help them, and they just might not be able to use a different sense. There are many reasons."

Fraser paused and clasped his hands behind his back. "In this class, we're going to try and break you out of the set molds of wanting to over rely on one sense. You might be a strong smeller but what happens if you touch something instead? Your eyesight might be sharp so that means we'll blindfold you and make you hear. This class is going to be about changing the way you perceive things to both aide and educate you."

At that, Fraser smiled. Even if their senses didn't become stronger, he'd known he at least helped them realize they could. "We're, of course, going to do introductions. I like knowing my students and I think you should know me as well. My name is Benton Fraser, I'm the head of school security and formerly a liaison to the Chicago police department for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I'm getting married in August and I think my strongest sense is my sense of taste. It's very helpful in tracking criminals."

Fraser was just going to leave that there, let them wonder. "Now, it's your turn. Please tell me your name, a little bit about yourself and what you think your strongest sense is. Sound easy? Good. I'll be choosing two TA's during this exercise so be prepared. All right, let's start."

Take notes, talk with each other, sleep, eat, whatever!

Hiccup listened attentively. It was almost a novelty to have a teacher who wasn't, well, a bit crazy. If anyone asked, he'd be forced to admit that he was half-expecting something weird to happen, but it didn't mean he wasn't paying attention.

This seemed like a simple enough class, and Christian thought it would be enjoyable (and give him a way to revel in the world as a true Bohemian should). He jotted down a few thoughts, but mostly just listened.

Madison listened to the lecture with mild interest. So far her illusionary body functioned the way any tangible body did so she should be able to participate okay in this class.

Firekeeper listened to the lecture, pleased to be in a class where she was certain she- and Blind Seer- would likely excel.

This guy tasted things to find criminals? Clark was just gonna stare...with his eyes. They were his best sense after all, with the whole varying levels of x-ray vision thing.

Bruce listened carefully. It seemed appropriate.

Tell Fraser your name, a little about yourself and what your strongest sense is!

"I'm Hiccup Haddock." He figured that much of his name was enough. "Feel free to laugh at the name, it's a fine old Viking tradition. The name and the laughing." Hiccup scratched the side of his head. "I guess my strongest sense is touch. I like making things, and I'm good at it." Honesty forced him to add, "Most of the time, anyway."

"Mr. Haddock, welcome to the class," Fraser said, greeting him with a nod. "It's an unusual name, I'll give you that, but I like to think of that as unique. After all, you're not likely to have to share that name with others, will you?"

Just as he hadn't met another Benton in his travels. He was certain that Hiccup would have even better luck with that.

"Touch is a very good sense to be strong in," he added. "If you can't use your sense of sight, you can feel something and still discern what it is. It's very helpful."

"I'm Christian," Christian began. "I'm seventeen and a senior. I'm from London, 1895. I think my strongest sense is my sense of hearing. I love music, and I'm good at picking out musical rhythms in different kinds of sounds."

"And a strong sense of hearing would go a long way in helping with that," Fraser agreed with a nod. "Do you feel you ever use another sense when it comes to music?"

"Maybe," Christian allowed. "Would you consider a sense of rhythm part of the sense of touch?"

"Well, I personally have no rhythm so I couldn't really say yes or no but I think, generally, it could be part of touch but I think rhythm involves listening to, doesn't it?," Fraser said thoughtfully.

"It's listening, but you have to feel the music too," Christian explained. "I read somewhere that some deaf mutes adore music, because they sense it through the floor. Isn't that lovely?"

"I have actually seen that occur," Fraser said and he agreed, it was lovely. "It's an amazing thing to be able to see their reaction when they sense the music. We take it for granted and they definitely do not."

"My name is Madison Avery," she said. "I've lived in Pennsylvania and Florida and I guess my strongest sense is my eyesight. I'm a photographer and I like to capture things I find visually interesting."

"What's your favorite thing to photograph?" Fraser asked curiously.

"Probably random, every day objects," Madison said. "But from a different angle or something."

"And do you find you only use your eyesight when taking pictures?" Fraser hadn't ever been a strong photographer himself but he could think of a few other senses that might come into play.

"Mostly?" Madison said hesitantly. "But, like, sometimes I try to capture an object in a way that makes you feel like you could taste or touch or smell it, you know?"

"Of course. I tend to leave the photography to those that know how to do it but I've seen photographs that look incredibly lifelike and vibrant so I can understand you mean," he replied with a nod.

Madison smiled. "Good, I was afraid I might sound kind of crazy there."

"I am Blysse Norwood," she introduced herself, dropping the 'House Kestrel' bit because it didn't seem too terribly relevant. "I grow up in the woods in my world, in the same pack as Blind Seer here," she tilted her head at the wolf, who gave the rest of the class a slight bow at the mention of his name. "He wish me to tell you his sense of smell is his greatest sense. Is mine, too, though compared to a wolf I am nose-dead."

"Welcome back, Miss Norwood and Blind Seer," Fraser said, giving her a smile. "A strong sense of smell is a powerful asset. Most often, people can smell when something isn't right before they can see it. I think any of us might be lower in skill than Blind Seer here when it comes to smell."

"Claudia Donovan. I'm a physicist." Yeah, she kind of figured that covered a lot about her. "I spend a lot of time peering at small circuitry and weird handwriting, so I think I'll have to go with my sight for the strongest. Though every now and then, I've caught something off in one of my projects by listening the mechanism."

"You're a physicist?" That was impressive. "I can't even imagine how strong your sense of sight has to be in order to do that particular job. Does it ever get tiring for your eyes?"

"Well, physicist-slash-engineer. I'm more of a fan of the practical applications than just theory." Claudia shrugged. "Sometimes. But that's why proper lighting and adjustable magnification are your friends."

"I always enjoy hearing about students being safe when they're doing what they enjoy," Fraser said, pleased. "I don't know if we'll be covering anything physics related in this class but I'm impressed that you are a physicist."

"Actually, since physics is all about the motion of matter through space-time, everything has to do with it." Yeah, she was dorking out, here, but this guy seemed to at least be kind of interested, so she figured she'd let herself do it. She smiled. "But I get your point."

Fraser couldn't help the laugh that slipped out at being corrected. "I think you're going to be far more intelligent in that realm than I am. So, you get my point but I also get yours."

"I'm Bruce Wayne, from a city in New York that either doesn't exist or is in a different state depending on which universe we're talking about," Bruce said. "My best sense is probably sight. I have pretty decent nightvision. I can even read fairly easily in low light environments."
