The Pen Is Mightier [Thursday, 1st Period]
Rick's class would have arrived to find an empty classroom. This was because Rick had forgotten to allow enough time to make a coffee run before class started.
"Morning kids," he announced cheerfully, as he waltzed in five minutes late, carrying a large box and several trays of coffee cups. "I come bearing coffee and pastries."
After said coffees and pastries had been distributed around the room, Rick continued. "My name is Richard Castle, and this class is The Pen Is Mightier. Now the point of this class isn't so much to teach you how to write, though we will be touching on some of the fundamentals of that, but to explore some ways of writing creatively, by trying out new experiences and learning skills, then using some element of that new experience to write short creative pieces."
"But first, introductions, name, class, and an experience you've had or skill you possess that you don't think anyone else in the class has. For example, I'm Rick, I'm a member of staff, and I've worked with the NYPD." If by worked, you meant stalked a particular detective for research purposes and been occasionally useful to her. He pointed at a random student. "You next."
Once the introductions were over and done with, Rick started passing around two handouts. "We're also going to do a brief grammar exercise today," he explained. "The first handout explains a bit about what's known as the parts of speech, the differences between nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, you ge the idea. The second has a poem that is both written largely in nonsense words and also grammatically correct.
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it, which you are, you don't actually have a choice here, is to try to identify which words belong to which category. You can work with each other, and at the end of class I'll pass around the poem's glossary so you can check."
