Carpe Diem: Making Your Lives Extraordinary, Period 4, Class 1

Drake was in Serious Mode (or at least pretending to be) when the class gathered. He was also unashamedly ripping off one of his favorite movies, and he didn't care what anyone thought about that. "the human race is filled with passion," he began. "And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, 'O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?' Answer: that you are here; that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

"We are food for worms, kids," Drake went on. "Because, believe it or not, each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold and die. But each of you also have in your hands the power to make your lives extraordinary. Don't wait until it's too late to make your lives even one iota of what you're capable. Now, that's heavy stuff for a summer workshop, right? But I'm just here to push you down that path, to help you see just how amazing and invincible each of you are. It's going to be ultimately up to you, but if I can help nudge you in the right direction, then my diem, it's been carpe'd.

"So, it's the first class, and I'm going to be a little lazy. Actually, you're going to do all the work and help me decide just what we're going to do for this class. I want you to each tell me your name, age, where you're from and a little about yourself...and one thing you want to do before you die. I gotta tell you, anything involving death and violence is going to be right out, because I'm a lover not a fighter. Try to come up with something fun, something that could be shared with others...something within the power of one awesomely hot demon. And I'll see what I can do.

"Oh, and I already randomly choose some TAs by throwing darts at the class roster -- MiniDrake, Didi, the job's yours."

Thanks to the events of this morning, there was an unusually solemn Bobby in class today. He was paying attention to what Drake was saying, but not taking notes or anything (or even doodling on his notebook, which, lets face it, was more likely than ever taking notes).

Karla didn't really look like she was carpe dieming, though if there was any consolation, she looked to be seizing her giant cup of coffee with pretty tight fingers. Unfortunately, neither the caffeine nor the copious amounts of sugar seemed to be helping with the dark circles around her eyes.

She heard Drake speaking and was trying to pay attention, but it was really hard to focus.

Didi smiled a bit grimly. She didn't think she'd stop breathing, turn cold, and die (except in the most superficial physical sense); she wasn't sure what happened to the Endless after the end of the universe, but she suspected it wouldn't be nearly so mundane.

Still, it was a good lesson for the humans in class, and she agreed with the larger principle.

Alex didn't really want to think about dying, so she tried to think up of ideas on how to make her life more extraordinary. Having magic to help her didn't hurt, either.

Drake's lecture was not exactly the most cheerful thing to start out with, particularly after the morning she'd had, but luckily the morning she'd had meant Kennedy was too damned tired to think about it too hard.

She might just, like... put her head down and nap on her desk. She could get away with it, right?

Sookie looked like someone who'd been worried most of the night, but who had recently received some relief. She wasn't taking notes, really, because she rarely did.

"I'm Nobody Owens but I go by Bod. It's my real name and my parents didn't hate me," he said, getting that familiar explanation out of the way. "I'm from a graveyard in England. I grew up there, raised by ghosts and the graveyard's caretaker but that doesn't mean I'm a ghost myself. I'm quite human."

He would have offered himself up to be poked but the class was rather large and he was sure someone would interpret that in a dirty fashion.

"I want to do everything before I die," he said and blushed a bit. Narrowing it down was difficult when that was truly the truth. "Specifically, I'd like to travel so I can meet all sorts of people, not just ones confined to this country."

"Bobby Drake," Bobby introduced himself. "I'm from Westchester, New York, and I used to go to another boarding school there, though it was pretty small compared to this one- just four other students. As for what I'd like to do before I die..." he thought about that one for a moment, "Windsurfing? Maybe that's kind of lame, but I've already done skydiving," without a parachute, but he wasn't going to add that part.

It took a few seconds of prodding before Karla realized it was her turn. "I'm Karla," she said slowly, even those simple words taking a while to form. "I'm from Glacia, in the Realm Kaeleer. I just want to be a good Queen before I die. Is that okay?"

"I'm Didi," Didi said, glancing around the class. "I think most of you have heard me say this before, but I'm a human embodiment of death for my universe. I know how quickly life will go for most of us."

Not everyone, though.

"I've been human almost a year, and I've done pretty much everything I'd want to do -- and so many things I never imagined. But maybe I'd like to learn to surf."

She was quiet for a moment. "I would like to find a place to be where I am welcome to live out the rest of my life."

Given the roving existence Dru had led with her dad, she'd never really thought long term. And now, knowing about Sergej and how he wanted her dead, Dru wasn't even sure she'd live through how ever long it would take her bloom into a full svetocha. "I'm Dru Anderson. I guess, someday I'd like to see Paris." As far as answers went, it was pretty lame, but hopefully it was romantic enough for Drake.

"I'm Madison Avery. I'm from a tiny town in Pennsylvania called Three Rivers but I spent a lot of time in the Florida Keys as well," Madison said. "I'm an amateur photographer and I..."

She hesitated for a moment but even with what she had learned about the weirdness at this school, she wasn't about to blurt out that she was already dead. "I guess I'd like to go to Europe."

"I'm Ellie Bartowski," Ellie said when it was her turn. "I'm from Encino, California in the past. It's 1997 back home. Honestly, the one thing I want to do before I die is become a doctor. I want to do something important."

She felt like it was a lame answer, but it was also true.
