Keeping Your Advantage: Terrain and You, Week I [Monday, Period 1]

Today's class met at the main campfire, and as the students arrived, they'd find their teacher playing with a few left-over sparklers from the other night.

Occasionally, Ghanima did act her physical age instead of her mental one.

"Well now," she said, her voice carrying effortlessly. "Many new faces! How very exciting! And for those of you that I've seen before... welcome back."

Ghanima was not sure if it was a mark of approval in her choice in subject matter, or if her students were simply masochists. She was not ruling out either option.

"For those of you that are new, I am Lady Ghanima Atreides, and this is Keeping Your Advantage. If you have not had one of my classes before, you may call me Lady Ghanima, Miss Ghanima, or Miss Atreides, whichever you are more comfortable with. The first person to call me Lady Atreides gets detention," Ghanima announced, smiling. "Lady Atreides is my grandmother, and I will not answer to it."

"This is a class intended to give you a basic grounding in the varying types of terrain you may encounter, and how to survive it. The simple fact that you are at this school is testimony to the fact that you never know where you may find yourself."

"From cityscapes to icebergs, each week we will look at a different type of terrain, and one thing you can do to make your life easier. Please be aware that there is no syllabus to this class, because I don't want you to have time to prepare for each scenario. Many times you will have to work with only the things you have on you during an emergency, and learning to keep your wits about you is important."

"Today, we are going to start with the most basic skill you can have: making a fire, and some basic cooking skills. I'd like you to work as a group to get this fire started, and then we'll make some hot dogs, s'mores, baked potatoes, and grilled cheese."

Cassidy was very excited about taking another class from Lady Ghanima and she was paying attention to everything.

Get together, gather wood, and get the fire going. Feel free to chat with your classmates.

This was something Bod had actually done before. Spending days camping in the woods, out away from civilization had made him particularly good. He went about gathering wood first.

Well, here was one thing Cara didn't miss about travelling with the others.

"Anyone here a wizard or otherwise able to conjure flame with their mind?" She was perfectly capable of building and starting a fire the proper way, but this way would save on the work.

Cassidy smiled and nodded. "I can." In a moment, there was a small flame of witch fire balancing in her hand. She leaned over carefully to light the wood on fire.

This was perfectly easy, as far as Katniss was concerned. The first step to any good fire was to make sure that the wood was dry, so she set to gathering small twigs and kindling. She'd check logs later to see if they weren't wet, but for now, her focus was on making sure there was the light, dry material that would actually catch.

It seemed that Lion-o had gotten a lot of practice with fire lately. He gathered up some kindling and got started getting his fire going.

Asuna gathered the wood and started to arrange it then stopped. "Um, does anyone have a match?"

This was something that Goose actually knew how to do, so he went and started to pick up some wood so that he could go about preparing the fire.

Once students got the fire going, Ghanima brought out a large box of foodstuffs. Potatoes, apples, hot dogs, a tin of coffee, bread, cheese, and ingredients for bannock and s'mores.

"Help yourselves," Ghanima said, putting the box down. "But there's no tinfoil, cups, or other cutlery. You'll need to find sticks or get creative. If you want coffee, you need to find something to use as a cup."

"Once you get cooking, I'd like you to take turns introducing yourselves, since we have so many new faces. Tell us your name, and what sort of terrain you are most interested in learning about. What is it that drew you to this class? Feel free to start up conversations with each other."

While he could make a fire, he wasn't a great cook so Bod decided he'd go with the s'mores since he had made those during the previous time in the cabins.

"I'm Nobody Owens," he introduced, nodding once. "I go by Bod, though, to prevent any confusion or to stave off any talks about having low self esteem. And I think I'm most interested in terrains that aren't flat. I did a lot of walking back home and it was mostly flat terrain with some hills. I know there are other elevations out there."

Katniss had never had a marshmallow, much less a s'more, so she was somewhat entranced by the idea of these tiny chocolatey, gooey sandwiches that she saw the others making.

She paused before taking a bite of hers, once it was constructed, and introduced herself quietly. "Katniss Everdeen," she said, looking around and cursing herself for being distracted by sweets. There were too many new faces to memorize, and she let her s'more be forgotten for the moment as she took in her classmates. "I'm very familiar with...heavy woods, so what I think would be most beneficial, for me, would be areas without cover. Plains and open fields. I tend to take to the trees, when I can."

She was going to leave it at that, because there was no need to mention the Games and how she would have to mentor some tributes, someday, who might be in an arena nothing like her own.

Cara was probably ignoring the spirit of the exercise by only taking foodstuffs that could eaten without further cooking, but trust her, it was for the best. "I'm Cara, and since you're asking, snow," she recited, doing her best to keep her actual level of interest in that out of her voice. "This seems like one of the few classes that's actually of any use."

Lion-o picked up one of the potatoes and turned it over in his hands, trying to figure out how best to cook it over a fire. He eventually figured out a way to wrap it in large damp leaves (which hopefully worked as well as foil) and bake the potato in his campfire.

"My name is Lion-o, and I am interested in mountainous terrain since I grew up in a land that was barren and surrounded by volcanoes," he said. "But all types of terrain can be interesting. After living in Fandom for a while, I feel very comfortable in the woodlands."

Cassidy figured that warming up some bread and putting the meat on a stick to cook would probably be for the best right now. After she had set the meat in the fire, she looked around.

"My name is Cassidy. I'm interested in all kinds of terrains because you never know where you might find yourself one day." She thought for a moment. "I was drawn to this class because I enjoyed your previous class and I thought this was another one that would be beneficial."

Goose decided to go for a s'more since it was something that he had never actually made before.

"I'm Shane Gooseman, Goose," he said, "and I'm not particularly interested in one specific terrain,"

Asuna wasn't a bad hand at cooking but that usually meant she had some form of cutlery. She puzzled over the food and decided to take the hot dogs, skewer it with a stick and hold it over the fire.

Easy!

"I'm Asuna Kagurazaka," she said, smiling. "And, I think I would be interested to learn about mountains."

Spock selected an apple and said, "I am Spock, and I am most familiar with the deserts. Therefore, I would like to learn about other forms of terrain. I chose to take this class because it seemed logical to learn how to handle myself in unfamiliar terrain. It is unlikely I will always find myself in familiar places."

She's around, before and after class.

Sorry for getting it up so late. After four days of convention, I slept in a weetiny bit.
