First Aid - Danger Shop, Friday, Period 5 [Week 7]

Whether the class showed up all at the same time or trickled in one by one, it didn't matter. Once they walked through the Danger Shop doors, the mood changed drastically.

The room looked exactly like the Fandom High gym, only it was littered with cots full of injured people, people attending to them and curtained off areas for surgery. More and more people were being brought in and loaded onto cots. Every so often outside there was a thunderous boom and crash as if there were explosions going off outside. The building would rock from the vibrations and the lights would dim.

Hawkeye, dressed in scrubs, stalked towards them through the chaos.

"Welcome back. There are two major differences between the gym you walked into seven weeks ago and the gym you walked into seven seconds ago. One: last time there was an invasion. This time it's a natural disaster. There's no telling what happened or if it will happen again. That's not your concern. The other difference is that you're better prepared to help the people around you. There's no need to give them a number. Find out what's wrong with them. Stabilize them using what you know and then decide whether to leave them there or tell an orderly to get them ready for a doctor. I hope you know my name by now. Call me if you need me."

Alex hadn't really wanted to be back here so soon. After his little breakdown on Father's Day, he'd been doing okay but this was just going to put him in a crap mood.

He tried to rub his eyes, get his focus back and concentrate.

This was a lot easier than the first class. Reason one, Hiccup knew they weren't real people. Reason two, he had at least some small idea how to actually help.

Easier, however, didn't mean easy, and he took a deep breath or two as he listened to Hawkeye, trying to focus on what he had to do and not how real the not real people seemed.

Emma had already had to put this class to use, when they'd found Sookie beaten to a pulp, so the idea of a repeat exercise was not something she was thrilled about.

Still, she started to yank her hair into a ponytail while looked around for a partner. No reason to get fake-blood in her hair, and no reason do this alone.

Sookie was deeply, deeply uncomfortable being here after last week, but she wasn't so weak-stomached that she wasn't going to do the assignment. "It'd be convenient if Karla and her web showed up," she commented dryly to Emma, tying her own hair back. "Wouldn't it?"

"But then I'd have to knock her out at some point, once she got too tired, and I've lost the element of surprise on that trick," Emma quipped in response.

Sookie slanted a look at her. "It's a neat trick," she acquiesced. "Little less neat when one's the intended target, but still impressive."

"But you felt nicely rested afterward?" Emma tried, giving Sookie a bright smile. "I could probably show you how to do it, if you want."

Sookie quirked a small smile, because 'nicely rested' was not how she felt later, no. But that wasn't Emma's fault. "Can you? I'm not sure my powers work the same way, but it seems useful."

Emma just shrugged. "We could try, at least. Sadly, it doesn't work on yourself when you have insomnia. Trust me, I've tried."

"Inconvenient how we're not susceptible to mind tricks," Sookie tsked. "Not that it'd be welcome most of the time -- Bill's got this 'glamour' thing he keeps trying on me and just looks ridiculous -- but not being able to use your own powers on yourself does kind of suck."

"I'm surprised the woman at Fangtasia didn't try that," she mused. "At least, she flashed fang at us to try and scare us off, but it didn't work too well."

"I'm sort of glad she didn't let you in," Sookie admitted. "It's...uncomfortable in there. And I'm pretty sure the owner only let me in 'cause Bill told him I'm a telepath."

"I don't think she believed that Bobby was my date," Emma sighed, shaking her head. "I was sorely tempted to try and zap her brain, just out of spite."

Chuck made some pretty awesome margaritas, and Kate had indulged herself, but she was luckily not hungover when she came to class today.

She still looked uneasy, though. And like she was debating whether she should even be here.

Hiccup walked up to the first stretcher he saw, staggering a little as an explosion went off. "How are you doing, bud--" He stopped as he realised she was unconscious, so witty banter wasn't exactly going to be an asset. "Except for the bit where it makes me feel better," he muttered as he took in her injuries: burns, deep and red, seared into her arms and chest and licking up the edge of her neck. Burns he knew, and these were bad, but..."She can wait to see a doctor, but get something to cover those," he told the orderly and moved on to the next person.

Who was glaring at him. "About time someone got here," the man said. "I've been waiting for hours and I'm in a great deal of pain." He whipped the blanket off his legs and pointed at his ankle, which was a little bit swollen. "Just look!"

Hiccup didn't say anything, just examined the ankle, prodding it slightly, and decided it wasn't even broken. "Well, okay, there's two options, entirely up to you which you take. I can cut it off right now and we can be fake-leg buddies." He lifted his metal foot to rest on the edge of the cot and raised an eyebrow. "Or you can wait quietly until someone has time to look at your sore ankle."

When the man indicated that he'd really prefer to wait, Hiccup moved off, heading for the next cot, moving faster when the dim lights brightened and he saw blood soaking into the sheet.

Alex's first patient was some young guy who was complaining about a pretty severe burn on his back. There was a dressing covering the burn already so Alex picked it up to see what it looked like. Reddened skin and blisters but it didn't look like the skin was coming off. Alex ruled out a third degree burn but the wound was over such a large area that it couldn't feel good.

"He's not in dire need of medical attention," Alex told the orderly, "but make sure he gets something for the pain. Burns fucking suck. Keep the dressing on and cool. Check on him to make sure the skin doesn't slide off. If it does, then we have a problem."

Alex moved onto the next patient then.

Much like the first week where she'd tagged in on the correct day Joolushko found herself face to face with the victim of a rather nasty head wound. Shortly thereafter it was face to unconscious face, which was worrisome, but the patient had seemed fairly lucid before passing out.

First thing was to clean the wound, which looked like it had been caused by a chunk of building falling. Then try and stop and stop the bleeding. Then, hopefully, she'd find someone who knew more about this than she did.

She was, and wondering what chess pieces each would stand in for, in a pinch.
