Diplomacy

There may be a test coming in the near future. And when I say near future, I mean next week. I’ll be available in my office hours for any additional questions you have. Today, we’ll spend half the class going over the notes up until now.

Now however, we will discuss this topic: Fashion and Diplomacy – What do you do when your attire offends the entire race to the point of violence?

Apologise and explain that you didn't mean to offend. Then ask if they'd be willing to supply you with any sort of outfit that wouldn't offend them and wear that instead.

Wear an incredibly stupid (and low-cut) bright blue dress and beaded veil.

If you're already apologized, there's really nothing you can do but offer to make amends by changing your clothes, or by removing yourself completely from their sight.

"I can't think of an instance in which my clothing would offend people...but I'd apologize and make amends as well as I could."

Sam replies, "Sometimes a woman wearing pants is enough to set off an incident."

Rory nods. "Fair point. Hadn't thought of that."

*his priest's collar offends people all the time*

Cultural thing, ma'am, and give 'em a whole-hearted apology beggin' ignorance. If they can't see that a misunderstandin' and apology should be sufficient, then they ain't worth dealin' with. *nods*

When class is over, someone is waiting like a goober doof hopelessly besotted idiot good Jedi (http://www.livejournal.com/users/emo_padawan/10863.html) in the hallway for Professor Amidala. He brought coffee.

Beka looks deathly serious when she comes to class. She has no coffee. Not for her nor for Padme. She wishes she'd thought of it, but in truth her mind is very much elsewhere.

In a flat tone she answers the question, without looking up. "Change the offending clothes immediately. Ask for a conference while properly dressed to make appropriate apologies. Only when apologies and amends have been offered and made, then attempt dialogue on matters of cultural difference."

After speaking, she glances at Padme, trying to smile enough to not seem insubordinate. (And despite her user picture, she is not carrying a weapon of any kind.)

Beka is writing furiously. She presses so hard on her pen that it flies out of her hand. "Damn it." She looks up. "Sorry. Not my best day."

(*kicks LJ for hiding this comment from reply-to for all these hours*)

"Thanks. I might take you up on that. I need to think first. Could I call?"

"It really should be something you think about before showing up, I would think..."

Oh, dear. Well, hypothetically, proper research before initiating first contact would protect you from landing in such a situation, but... Other than that? Retreat?
