Romance 101, Wednesday, Period 4 -- Class 7

Drake had the class meet in the Danger Shop this time. He was his own personal Danger Shop in a way, but he had plans for the students to make use of it.

"You've made it through dates and dancing and singing and other romantic gestures, now it's time for the big moment," Drake said. "The marriage proposal. The concept of marriage varies from culture to culture, but it's generally some kind of pledge to spend the rest of your lives together, along with an exchange of some sort of token, like a ring." Not that kind of ring, Karla.

"There are all sorts of ways to propose. Generally, you want to choose some sort of romantic moment to proclaim your everlasting love, like a candlelit dinner, but there are no set rules. There are plenty of ways to do it. You can hire an airplane to fly a banner through the sky. You can spell it out on the ground and take him or her for a hot air balloon ride -- just don't drop the ring. You can hide the ring in a wineglass or dessert, but you have to be careful they doesn't accidentally eat it and spoil the moment. You can propose via a huge view screen at a sporting event, but you gotta be prepared for public humiliation in that case if the object of your affection says no. You can even go on a TV show to pick your mate, but that's kind of silly."

Drake moved over to Angela and sank down to one knee, snapping his fingers to conjure up a ring. He held it up to her, his eyes full of adoration. "Or you can simply drop down to one knee and say 'Angela, I love you. Will you marry me?'"

Drake hopped back up to his feet and vanished the ring before Angela could react. "Anyway, your final assignment is to imagine you're with the person you're spending the rest of your life with. You want to ask him or her to be your husband or wife. Then pair up and make that proposal. You can play with the Danger Shop controls if you want to create the atmosphere, and I'll give you big points for creativity."

"N-not they're t-type I guess," she said with a shrug. Then she smiled. "You like poetry? I don't think I've met any guys who like poetry. That's pretty neat."

Christian shook his head again at the folly of youth. "I love poetry," he said. "It's the truest mirror we have to life. The poem I wanted to read my future bride is called 'Desire.'"

Chloe got comfortable in her chair and looked at Christian expectantly.

This was probably one of the only times this would happen to her, so she was going to enjoy this make believe production of a marriage proposal, thank you very much.

Christian folded his hands behind his back (smiling slightly at the theater of it) and began:

Where true Love burns Desire is Love's pure flame;
It is the reflex of our earthly frame,
That takes its meaning from the nobler part,
And but translates the language of the heart.

Done with the recitation, he fell to his knee. "Miss Saunders, it is you who translates the language of my heart, who lifts me up where I belong. You are all I need. Would you do me the extreme honor of becoming my wife?"

Breathe, Chloe. This is all pretend, remember. But really, the first guy to ever ask Chloe on a date would have some high expectations to meet.

She smiled and nodded. "I would be honored and happy to become your wife after such a display of love and devotion," Chloe said without stuttering once.

Really, all Christian could hope for would be to wreck Chloe for other men forever.

"Normally I would kiss you now," Christian said, grinning again as he rose to his feet. "But that's going a bit far for a class exercise, isn't it?"

He was doing pretty good with that so far, if she were to ever know that.

She grinned, blushing very pink again. "I think that it would get us into a bit of trouble and that would be too much for a classroom setting." And hey, look at that, still not a stutter when talking with him. "Perhaps having a seat and finishing our celebratory champagne is acceptable."

"An excellent plan," Christian said, taking his own seat. He raised his glass in a toast. "To love!"

She grinned and toasted him back. "To love."
