Romance 101, Wednesday, Period 4 -- Class 7

Drake had the class meet in the Danger Shop this time. He was his own personal Danger Shop in a way, but he had plans for the students to make use of it.

"You've made it through dates and dancing and singing and other romantic gestures, now it's time for the big moment," Drake said. "The marriage proposal. The concept of marriage varies from culture to culture, but it's generally some kind of pledge to spend the rest of your lives together, along with an exchange of some sort of token, like a ring." Not that kind of ring, Karla.

"There are all sorts of ways to propose. Generally, you want to choose some sort of romantic moment to proclaim your everlasting love, like a candlelit dinner, but there are no set rules. There are plenty of ways to do it. You can hire an airplane to fly a banner through the sky. You can spell it out on the ground and take him or her for a hot air balloon ride -- just don't drop the ring. You can hide the ring in a wineglass or dessert, but you have to be careful they doesn't accidentally eat it and spoil the moment. You can propose via a huge view screen at a sporting event, but you gotta be prepared for public humiliation in that case if the object of your affection says no. You can even go on a TV show to pick your mate, but that's kind of silly."

Drake moved over to Angela and sank down to one knee, snapping his fingers to conjure up a ring. He held it up to her, his eyes full of adoration. "Or you can simply drop down to one knee and say 'Angela, I love you. Will you marry me?'"

Drake hopped back up to his feet and vanished the ring before Angela could react. "Anyway, your final assignment is to imagine you're with the person you're spending the rest of your life with. You want to ask him or her to be your husband or wife. Then pair up and make that proposal. You can play with the Danger Shop controls if you want to create the atmosphere, and I'll give you big points for creativity."

Ummm...yes. This wasn't dismaying at all. Especially not to Karla who--everything else these past two weeks aside--wasn't even entirely sure if she ever would get married anyway.

Did you know it was possible to give the impression of slouching and hunching over while still maintaining perfect posture? Because somehow Cara managed that.

Of all the ridiculous and useless classes so far, this was surely the most ridiculous and useless example of them all.

Dismay was an excellent way to describe it! Edmund did just that.

Dismay had, by this point, settled into resignation.

It was the logical progression of this class and Rosalind soothed herself with the fact that she'd guessed right even though the topic did not particularly thrill her.

Oh yes, there was much dismay from Chloe. She didn't know if she could ever have a relationship much less get married.

Dismay was one word for it. Though Lindsay was not terribly surprised this would end up being a topic.

Yeah, Alex was just going to sit over here in dismay. Since she wasn't sure about marriage at all.

Christian was, of course, delighted by this class topic. He'd been thinking about how he'd propose since he was old enough to now what marriage was. (He never quite worked out the identity of object of his affection, other than that she was tall, red-haired, and very beautiful.) He jotted down a few of his ideas during the lecture.

George wasn't actually paying attention enough to stare at Drake in dismay. Instead he was leaning so far back in his chair that he was in in danger of flipping over and daydreaming.

Dru's expression wasn't so much dismay, but more resignation.

She'd be so much happier when this class was over.

Harper was confused, but then again, her thoughts on marriage were just slightly tainted by her parents and their constant arguing.

Proposals! Wasn't the guy supposed to be the one to propose? Knowing Squall, she'd have to do the honors herself, but that was hardly romantic.

Momoko was a bit dreamy at the mention of marriage. It was one of her two life dreams, after all! She did wonder if she'd have to be the one to propose, though. The traditional way was totally more romantic!
