Maritime Mammals, Tuesday, Period 6
Summer had handwavily notified the students to meet in the Danger Shop today. It was set up like an aquarium and research lab mixed together.
"Hi everyone," Summer said, once all of her students were settled in. "Today's our last class and I thought we should end on a high note. So, we're going to learn about manatees."
If she happened to glance at Peterif he was there when she said that, well, it was just a coincidence. Really.
"Manatees, also known as sea cows, are widely known for their large size and friendly nature. Records have show that they can grow to twelve feet in length," Summer explained and gestured to a glass tank wall containing two manatees. It looked as though they were studying Summer and the students.
"Studies have shown that manatees are capable of understanding discrimination tasks, and show signs of complex associated learning and advanced long term memory, similar to dolphins." Yeah, how about that?
"They are herbivores
"Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and coastal areas — particularly where seagrass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish. Manatees are a migratory species and can be found in Florida or Texas, depending on the season."
Summer glanced at the manatee tank and smiled before continuing. "They really are an interesting mammal and the more we study them, the more we discover. I'm happy to report that there are conservation efforts currently active in Florida and other states and countries across the world." Summer was a huge fan of conservation efforts and was proud to contribute to the ever growing effort.
"You've been a great class and I hope I get to see you again, whether it's the next summer session or sometime in the fall."
[OCD up!]
