Maritime Mammals, Tuesday, Period 6
Today, class was back at the Danger Shop.
Summer had set it up to look like a beach with a cliff face and different sized rocks strewn about the sand. She was perched on one of the rocks in the front of the room.
"Today's class is all about seals," Summer explained. "And sea lions," she gestured to a cliff face where a group gathered.
Summer smiled as a mother and her pup moved off the cliff and onto the sand. "Sea lions can be found all over the world; their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the northern and southern hemispheres. They feed on a wide variety of seafood -- mainly squid and fish. They tend to eat alone or in small groups," she stated.
"Seals live all over the world, from the frozen wastes of the polar regions, to the tropical beaches in Hawaii, and almost everywhere in between. They are insulated from the cold by a thick layer of blubber," Summer continued. "They have sensitive whiskers that help them to detect prey in murky waters." She spotted a seal pup and its mother resting near the water's edge. "As soon as a pup is born, its mother forms a bond with it by smelling and calling to it."
"Seals tend to eat fish, shrimp, and other animals that they chase out of the water," Summer said. They don't usually stay under water for long periods of time but they can stay under for thirty minutes and dive as deep as 1,000 feet while on a hunt. They swim, breed, and pup in large groups for protection."
"Sea lions and seals share some similarities and are often confused for each other but they are, in fact, two distinct species," Summer concluded.
