Functional French, Tuesday, Period 2

The students who arrived early today would find no sign of their teacher. Nor would the students who arrived right on time, or even those who crept in five minutes late.

But, eventually -- about 15 minutes into the hour -- Henry raced in the door, wearing a misbuttoned shirt a size too big and with a long smudge of mud along one cheek.

It was better the class not ask.

"Sorry about that," he tossed off. "We're talking about emergencies today, and I had one, lucky me."

Again ... better not to ask.

He passed out several handouts, briefly lecturing on their content. Then he smiled at the class. "For your assignment today, I'd like for you to pair up. One of you is in an assigned emergency, the other is helping you. Then reverse the situation."

Peter looked at his handout and promptly laughed. He'd have fun with this.

Rilla smiled at yet another handsome boy. She was starting to think that the island was just full of them. //Are you having an emergency?// she asked in fairly mangled French.

//My room in the hotel is on fire// Peter said, his grammar a bit off. //Could you call for a fireman?//

"You're taking the news quite well," she said in English, dimpling at him before consulting her notes. //I can,// she said. //Do you need a doctor?//

Peter chuckled. "Sorry, let me try to be more in character," he said in English before switching back to the exercise. //My fingers are burned!// he exclaimed, in mock worry. //A doctor would be nice.//

//Oh, not your fingers!// she cried melodramatically, and possibly calling them turnips. //How will you ever continue to play the piano?//

She had given him quite a backstory all of the sudden.

Peter actually looked a little surprised. //How did you know I played the piano?// he asked, earnestly.

//You have soulful eyes,// she told him. //French women notice these things.//

Or so she assumed.

Peter suddenly really liked this exercise. //Thank you//, he said. //I wouldn't worry too much about my hands. They are not badly burned.//

//We should still have the doctor check them, just in case,// Rilla replied.

//If you insist//, Peter said. //I'm afraid all my money is on fire, right now//

Rilla arched her eyebrows at him and then glanced down at her notes again. //I'm sure we could come up with a payment plan. Sometimes my father gets chickens.//

If she had gotten half of that even close in French, she'd be very proud of herself.

"...Was that something about chickens?" Peter said, faltering from French entirely.

Rilla looked pleased. "Yes. My father's a doctor. Sometimes he gets paid in chickens."

"Seriously," Peter said. "Not just made up for the class, paid in chickens."
