Unblinded Science, Period Six [6/14]

Today's practicum is variations on a theme - camera obscura. For those with a general respect for living things, students will find workstations with materials and instructions to make a paint can camera.

For those with a more adventurous/morbid turn of mind there is a rather more peculiar experiment involving formerly live squid and their ocular apparatus.

Walter will happily demonstrate for interested students how to remove the eye from a squid and attach it to an apparatus of Walter's design that will display the last view that the squid had in life*.

He will then turn the students over to take their own now-dead squid with the direction that they must find what the squid last saw before death. (In all instances, the squid's last view was of Walter wearing a clown hat, a cowboy hat, or a fez, student's choice.)

For reference, initially the view will likely be upside down unless the student has the squid attached upside down to begin with.

[ooc: Students are not required to participate in or even read the squid portion of the class today. Feel free to log in and make cameras and ignore the students in the other side of the classroom.

The paint can camera was way less icky, so that's what Lindsay was going to work on.

Joolushko was not a fan of ickiness. Eyeballs were icky. Therefore Joolushko was going to stick with the camera, which was not icky.

Peter was so skeptical he was actually trying this one out.

He thankfully wasn't too squeamish.

"What are we possibly going to see, any way? Angry fishermen?"

Scully already had goggles and gloves on, and was grasping a scalpel like a pro. "More than likely no. Could you hold that while I pop the eyeball out?"

Color Peter heavily impressed. He already had his own gloves on, as well, so didn't even hesitate to hold down the squid for her.

"You do this sort of thing often?" he said, just a little glib.

Scully looked amused behind her goggles, and said, "Not with squid, no." Sh carefully got the eye to detach from its semi-socket, the retina trailing behind it. "But I do a lot of biological examinations, yes. More than anything else, really."

"This have anything to do with that internship?" Peter asked, curious. "Some sort of hands-on biology lab?"

Okay, seriously gross, but Tim wanted to see if it worked. He put on medical gloves, a lab coat and a mask and started removing the eyeball.

Walter beamed at him like a student expecting some juicy extra credit points. "It could be more impressive, I know, but they do frown on using human cadavers here."

Walter lost some of his joviality. "You must have a stronger stomach than that, son. Unlike humans, squid are rarely the victims of crimes. No matter what some chefs may perpetrate."
