Surviving & Thriving -- Monday -- Second Period.

The students had all received handwavey handwritten letters, informing them to meet in town for class today, with directions to Pixie Dust.

When they arrived, the girl behind the counter gave them a interested once-over before going back to her magazine and soda.

"Fashion," Ghanima began. "You may have noticed by now that there is a wide variety of clothing worn at Fandom. We are a mesh of many cultures, and it is reflected in the fashions worn at school and about town."

"Nobody here expects you to suddenly turn around and change your manner of dress," Algren added, in spite of the fact that he was wearing something decidedly more modern than usual, today. It was Armani. Tony had made him get it. Sometimes, you just had to wear clothing that cost more than you earned in a year in order to make a point to your class, apparently. "But understanding that the modern day and age is prone to making decidedly different fashion choices than what you're used to can go a long way, around here. As can being open-minded about the clothing that your classmates feel most comfortable wearing."

Ghanima, by contrast, was actually wearing jeans and a tank-top today, instead of her usual Imperial gowns. Renee and Faith had made her buy them. "For those of us from decidedly different worlds, sometimes one or two outfits in the back of our closet can be useful, if we have to go off-island," she pointed out. "My eyes stand out if I'm visiting the mainland, so I have invested in some basic pieces that do not immediately mark me as 'Other.'"

"It is perfectly acceptable for ladies to wear pants in this place and time, or even shorts," she continued. "Men in skirts is less-common, unless it is a particular style known as the 'kilt', and bathing costumes for the beach are available for both sexes. Jewelry is also acceptable for all genders."

"You might be surprised to see people wearing far less clothing than you're used to," Algren noted. "Where and when I'm from, unless you're wearing several layers, you're not only underdressed, you're practically indecent. In this day and age, less seems to be... More."

He gave a small, almost uncomfortable tug at the bottom corner of the tight blue sweater that he was wearing. Yes, it still felt to him as though he was wearing underwear. It would probably need a vest and a jacket to go with it before he could possibly start to feel less naked.

"Skin isn't necessarily a sin, nowadays, so long as you keep even the barest of essentials covered. That said, please, don't hesitate to dress conservatively. People who wear too little often end up with reputations that they do not want to see following them home."

"It is about what you are comfortable with," Ghanima agreed. "For instance, my stepmother runs the haberdashery here in town, and I might be scandalized to see Irulan not wear a hat at a public occasion. I myself would be uncomfortable at a formal event without some sort of headgear or elaborate hairstyle." Irulan (and the Imperium) was a horrible influence.

"Should you chose to adapt your clothing style to something different from your home, you must keep in-mind that even foundation garments are different in this day and age. With that in mind, we have met here today so that you may try on anything you like, as an adventure. Because you cannot be expected to make an informed choice without exploring your options," she said. "Captain Algren, myself, Miss Annja, and Miss Makita--" she nodded to the girl behind the counter, who raised a hand in greeting, "--are all here to assist if you have questions."

"If you find something you like, please see Captain Algren or myself for a ticket. I have standing accounts both here and at Turtle and Canary, which also carries clothing. You are each entitled to one ticket, as our final will be going off-island." She smiled and raised her hands to shoo them off. "Now go explore!"

Rilla's attention was caught by the mention of a haberdashery in town--she did love a smart-looking hat--but her eyes kept wandering back to the complete lack of fabric in modern swimwear. Her underthings had more substance.

Raven had already adapted to Fandom somewhat by...adding a little color to her wardrobe. It hadn't been entirely by choice; Joan had insisted that she branch out from her simple black dresses and cloak. She hadn't braved pants, though. Azarath had no pants. Azarath needed no pants.

Men's clothes hadn't changed nearly so much as women's clothes had in the last hundred years, but Christian was still faintly befuddled -- especially by the t-shirts, which looked to him like so many undershirts being sold as outerwear.

Uhura smiled at the mention of hats. She had taken to wearing one when she felt like dressing up her outfits a little. In fact, she wore one today- a little straw number she learned was called a "cowboy hat."

Ah, clothes. From court dress to beggar's rags, James preferred something that blended it, fit well, and let him move about freely; the fashion of today of wearing tight pants of the jean material did not suit him. He found it annoying that it was difficult to hide a dagger under without announcing its presence.

Raven gravitated toward anything black, hush. But she spared glances for dark purples and burgundies, giving the most attention to flowing skirts and gothic-y tops. She so would've been home at what Hot Topic used to be but not the crap that it is now, but I'm not bitter.

Cassidy was enjoying looking at the racks pants and flowing tops. They weren't exactly like the trousers she kept stealing from Clayton back at home. These were different and they seemed to fit her a bit better.

Jason knew that he wasn't a particularly fashionable guy, but he didn't think there was anything wrong with that. Still, he took a cursory glance through the shirts, to see if there was anything even close to what he'd wear.

Beka found herself drifting to racks she'd otherwise would have been forbidden from. Mayhap next time they should invite Emma along for this class.

Uhura flipped through a rack of dresses. She pulled out an electric blue dress (http://www.shabbyapple.com/p-662-manager-director.aspx), and held it up to herself.

"Yes? No?" She asked no one in particular.

James decided to try something more modern, more dressy; he wandered into the suit section.

He was not as lost as he looked, but if anyone wanted to help the poor boy, he'd be thankful.

Algren was there, and well-dressed, and wondering why he'd decided to make today an Armani day.
