The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1
Once again, class was being held out near the Preserve so the students could get hands on with their lessons. Fraser was standing at the edge of the woods, hands behind his back. Dief was laying beside him, looking as content as a deaf half wolf could look.
"Today, we're going to talk about plants," Fraser began, nodding. "Plant life, you see, is all around us. It grows lush, it grows barren, it grows grows in the hottest temperatures and it grows in the coldest of temperatures. Most people don't always pay attention to the plant life because it's one of those things that is always just there. People take it for granted, thinking a flower that's there one day will be there the next. Unfortunately, that's not always the case."
Fraser frowned but shook it off. "Plants include familiar organisms such as trees, herbs, bushes, grasses, vines, ferns, mosses, and green algae. As of 2004, some 287,655 species had been identified, of which 258,650 are flowering and 18,000 bryophytes. That is an astounding and amazing number. And it makes it near impossible to cover each type of plant. The specific categories include land plants, green plants, archaeplastida, algae, and fungi."
Having explained that, Fraser passed out a small packet of papers going into further detail about each of these categories and giving examples. "Now, your assignment for today is to head into the Preserve and try and find different types of plants. You might not know their names but look carefully at each plant, try to pick up classifications and then write what you've observed down. You have the entire class period. Enjoy yourselves."
