Romance 101, Wednesday, Period 4 -- Class 5

Much to the horror of most of the class, they would find a karaoke set-up in the front of the room when they arrived. Don't even think of trying to slink away; Drake would hunt you down and drag you back, kicking and screaming.

"All right, kiddies," Drake said, clapping his hands and rubbing them together. "Love songs. I had you dance to them once, but today, we're going to sing them. Don't worry if you don't have a great voice. Sometimes embarrassing yourself a little can be a really romantic thing. So you're going to pick a song and belt it out. Sing from the heart. It's the words and the emotion that matters, not your voice. I'll step up and get you started."

The power of love is a curious thing
make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a hawk to a little white dove
more than a feeling
that's the power of love

Tougher than diamonds, rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream
make a bad one good make a wrong one right
power of love that keeps you home at night

You don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
but it might just save your life
That's the power of love
That's the power of love

First time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it it might make you mad
But you'll be glad baby when you've found
that's the power makes the world go round

And it don't take money, don't take fame
don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden it can be cruel sometimes
but it might just save your life

They say that all in love is fair
yeah, but you don't care
But you know what to do
when it gets hold of you
and with a little help from above
you feel the power of love
you feel the power of love
Can you feel it?

It don't take money and it don't take fame
don't need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
you won't feel nothin' till you feel
you feel the power, just the power of love
That's the power, that's the power of love
You feel the power of love
you feel the power of love
feel the power of love

"Now, your turn. If you have trouble, I'll pick a song for you."

Cara was a master of stealth, she was sure she'd be able to reach the door without being noticed.

Edmund had fully intended to try sneaking out, only to see Cara beating him to it and being foiled in her attempt.

He was doomed. Completely and utterly doomed to sing in front of his peers. The look on his face was somewhere in the realm of alarmed, bewildered and lost. "This is madness."

Oh, sure, someone else had to go for the door. Meanwhile Kitty was looking at the floor and hoping so hard that it was basement under there. Of course, she might be in a little bit of trouble if it wasn't.

So Kitty just tried to make her way towards a wall, slowly, very slowly, so as not to attract attention, totally planning on phasing out of there so hard, omg.

Others went for the door, Dru was seriously considering the window.

Or at least faking a sudden, horrible case of laryngitis.

Rosalind inwardly fumed as she watched her classmates try (and fail) to get away (though she did wonder how that girl--Kitty?--had been planning to go through a wall) and kept to her seat.

She'd spent the last few days in an epic bad mood and now she was expected to sing.

Rosalind was this close to trying to walk out. Only the fact that it would a) fail and b) went against everything she believed in about school to just leave in the middle of a class, kept her seated.

Singing, though, that might be a bit much.

Sing?! He wanted them to sing?

In front of everyone in the class?!

Chloe had been pretty positive that nothing would ever make her hate one of Drake's classes. Now, she wasn't so sure.

She wasn't trying to escape out of the classroom, but she was trying to make herself really small in her seat as she tried to figure out a way out of this.

Christian's eyes were shining in excitement. Sneaking out was the furthest thing from his mind; he didn't understand how his classmates were less than delighted by the chance to sing.

"Do we have to?" Lindsay whined asked. She kind of wanted to hide right now. Or flee.

Ben thought his classmates were being a bunch of babies. It was only singing. It wasn't like there were costumes involved...

More than ever, Karla was thanking the Darkness for Dinah's gift of the ipod. It was still her only real introduction to this world's music.

Unlike most of her classmates, she wasn't feeling particularly fussy about today's assignment. If she was going to take part in the musical at the Boards this semester, she was going to have to get used to singing in front of people anyway.

KARAOKE!!!!!! And love songs?

Momoko was practically bouncing in her seat. She couldn't wait to see the song catalogue!

After casting a brief glare at it, Cara ignored the karaoke machine and started singing (for values of singing that included monotonal reciting of lyrics) The Mord'Siths' Agiel Has a Knob Near The End, a fairly filthy D'Haran drinking song. Of course, any D'Haran drunk, stupid, or insane enough to actually sing it within earshot of a Mord'Sith would have soon found out exactly what she used her agiel for.

Edmund took a long, quiet breath before he started to sing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YaXx6TnaKE) a rather sad love song he remembered well enough. It sounded more suited to a 1930s wireless transmission than a 2010 classroom, but he went with what was most comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.

"Somewhere there's another land, different from this world below, far more mercifully planned than the cruel place we know. Innocence and peace are there, all is good that is desired. Faces there are always fair; love grows never old nor tired.

We shall never find that lovely land of might-have-been. I can never be your king nor you can be my queen. Days may pass and years may pass and seas may lie between. We shall never find that lovely land of might-have-been.

Sometimes on the rarest nights comes the vision calm and clear, gleaming with unearthly lights on our path of doubt and fear. Winds from that far land are blown, whispering with secret breath, hope that plays a tune alone, love that conquers pain and death.

Shall we ever find that lovely land of might-have-been? Will I ever be your king or you at last my queen? Days may pass and years may pass and seas may lie between. Shall we ever find that lovely land of might-have-been?"

Edmund then made a hasty retreat back to join the crowd.

Christian didn't have anything new prepared, so (with some regrets at the repeitition) he went with the song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_6gtAJ8ffA) he'd done two weeks before in his theater audition. It was odd, how such a jaunty tune made his eyes mist up.

Somewhere beyond the sea
somewhere waiting for me
my lover stands on golden sands
and watches the ships that go sailin'

Somewhere beyond the sea
she's there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
then straight to her arms
I'd go sailin'

Karla flipped through the machine for a few seconds until she found a song that she knew--and, better yet, it was perfectly suited to her range.

She also had something of a personal connection to the second verse, but she wasn't going to talk about that. She also wasn't going to do the dance that went along with the song, and wouldn't have even if she'd known it.

Lucky you were born that far away so
We could both make fun of distance
Lucky that I love a foreign land for
The lucky fact of your existence
Baby I would climb the Andes solely
To count the freckles on your body
Never could imagine there were only
Ten Million ways to love somebody

Le ro lo le lo le, Le ro lo le lo le
Can't you see
I'm at your feet

Whenever, wherever
We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear

Thereover, hereunder
You'll never have to wonder
We can always play by ear
But that's the deal my dear

Lucky that my lips not only mumble
They spill kisses like a fountain
Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains
Lucky I have strong legs like my mother
To run for cover when I need it
And these two eyes that for no other
The day you leave will cry a river

Le ro le le lo le, Le ro le le lo le
At your feet
I'm at your feet

Whenever, wherever
We're meant to be together
I'll be there and you'll be near
And that's the deal my dear

A fondness for Rob Thomas seemed to be hardwired into the Skywalker boys. Looking a little uncomfortable because singing wasn't exactly his forte, Ben began:

"Let it go,
Let it roll right off your shoulder
Don't you know
The hardest part is over
Let it in,
Let your clarity define you
In the end
We will only just remember how it feels

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders,
These twists & turns of fate
Time falls away,
But these small hours,
These small hours still remain...
"

Lindsay chose a power ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMD8hBsA-RI) by one of her favorite bands. Awkwardly, she stood in front of the class, rolled her eyes, and then got it over with.

Highway run, into the midnight sun,
Wheels go round and round, you're on my mind
Restless hearts, sleep alone tonight
Sending all my love, along the wire.

They say that the road ain't no place to start a family,
Right down the line it's been you and me,
And lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be,
Oh boy you stand by me.
I'm forever yours...faithfully.

Circus life, under the big top world.
We all need the clowns, to make us smile.
Through space and time, always another show,
Wondering where I am, lost without you.

And being apart ain't easy on this love affair,
Two strangers learn to fall in love again.
I get the joy of rediscovering you.
Oh boy, you stand by me,
I'm forever yours...faithfully

She really wanted to be anywhere but here when she finished the entire song.

Angela somehow missed most of the musical genes that should've been in the mix.

Yes, if asked, she would sing, but until that happened she was a very happy observer of all this. Especially the people trying to escape.
