Unblinded Science, Period Six [5/31]

Walter had decided to go from Tesla coils, which to his mind were slightly antiquated, to something a bit more modern - touch screens.

Today each student's workstation had two objects for the practicum - a computer, and a cuff meant to be fitted on the arm just below the elbow. However, against the wall are televisions, various video game consoles, a microwave oven with a bowl of papayas next to it, several cell phones, a blender (?) with another bowl of papayas, and several RC cars.

Walter was of the opinion that his cuff prototype was more useful than Carnegie Mellon's, but he did have a bit of an ego about little things like that, so who could really say?

"Have you ever watched a movie that was supposedly set in the future and realized that they were using technology that had not substantively changed from what you know now? Keyboards? Bah!"

Walter's entire face contorted in distaste. "And this is supposed to be from people with imagination?

"Today I want you to use your imaginations with these cuffs. It should be simple to program them using the building blocks on the computer, or if you're capable, I highly recommend home brew applications."

He pulled a cuff onto his arm, strapped it down properly, and demonstrated how to plug it into the computer before unplugging his and holding up his hand to the class to show the four arrows projected onto the palm of his hand. He tapped one of the arrows and one of the remote control cars shot off the table and started cruising down the aisle in the classroom.

"That was nothing. I want to see you do better. Now, experiment with controlling some of the items I have set up for you, or use the cuff to control the computer itself. You may work individually or in groups as you prefer."

"It really is," Scully said. "Although our advisor is hard-core, and reams out Mulder every time he does this. I don't know why it doesn't bother him more." She smirked at Peter. "What are you doing with your touch-pad?"

Peter showed off his forearm, where he had a the simple buttons like on a DVD player. When he pressed play, the TV nearby started playing the Yellow Submarine movie.

"Easy stuff, really," Peter said. "Though I'm thinking it'd be neat to actually link this up to one of those little portable music players, run some software and you could be your own walking DJ. It'd require a little more work, though."

"A one-man band," Scully said, amused. "You could even synch it to dance movements. I have to admit, I'm now wondering if we could somehow hook this up to the trebuchet Claudia's letting me help build."

So you could wave your hands, and fire.

"You're building a trebuchet," Peter repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Are we expecting to siege the school at some point?"

"It's the other way around, from everything Ino and others have told me," Scully said, slightly more sober. "The trebuchet is more of an intellectual exercise in physics, but if something does attack... well. At least we'll have something to contribute."

Peter thought for a moment, and actually decided that had a certain logic, even if there was a bit of crazy logic in there, as well. "I've heard that as well, about the invasions. Standing at the back with a medieval siege engine suits me just fine. You looking for some help with that project?"

"Actually, yes," Scully said, a small smile lurking. "We're putting it together back at the camp. It's going to take a while. So all contributions and suggestions are welcome."

"Well, not that I've studied ancient siege crafting in great detail, but I can always give it a crack. Where are you two getting the lumber from?" Peter asked. He figured it'd have to be sturdy... though he had no idea the scale they were building it to.

"I think Claudia said the junk yard. They don't actually come in a kit." Scully had to smile at him. "Any assistance is welcome. Or this will take all summer."

"I'll definitely chip in," Peter said. "Just for the fact this will make an excellent story down the road. The applied physics is just bonus."

He smiled. "Has Claudia tried to convince you to join that mad scientist's club she wants to put together?"

"I think she mentioned it the first time we met, but she hasn't since then," Scully said. "What would it involve, did she say?" And it actually sounded like something she might want to do....

"She hasn't given me a whole lot of specifics," Peter admitted. "But anything around here that puts an emphasis on science over magic or punching things has to be a step in the right direction."

"I can't disagree with that." Scully finally got the phone to ring, and gave it a very pleased smile. "If nothing else, catching up on the current possibilities should keep us occupied. Not to mention explaining this place. Singing flowers and teleporting baggage don't lend themselves to easy dismissal."
