The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1
Class was being held outside near the Preserve again despite the rain. If the students wanted to really learn about the outdoors, the elements would have to be something they'd have to cope with.
"Good morning," Fraser said as rain hit the brim of his Stetson. "As you can see, it's raining. I hope no one minds too much because we're not going inside. The rain's a part of being outside so we'll have to adjust. Today, we're going to be talking about animals. Now, it would be impossible for me to go over every single type of animal you might encounter while being outside. The possibilities depend on climate, place, time of day, and how developed the area is. Therefore, it's going to be impossible to prepare for all types of animal encounters."
If Fraser had a longer class period, he might have tried though. "The animals most commonly thought of when one is asked what they might come upon when outside are bears, snakes, birds, deer, skunks, raccoons, squirrels, and wolves. Those are what almost any layman to the outdoors will list when asked. And those are good choices. They are definite possibilities in almost all areas of the world. Some of those encounters could turn out to be dangerous and some not. It's up to you to judge the situation and know how to act."
Fraser nodded at the class. "Today, we're going to do a quick activity before I let you loose to go into the Preserve to see what animals might be in there. This island, of course, has some rather odd species. Your activity today will be to tell me what sort of preparation you would do if you encountered your assigned animal. Easy, right? Let's get to it."
