Study Hall -- Friday, October 21tst

Sarah glares at anyone who dares to enter, not about to put up with the same sort of shit she had to put up with yesterday. She hunches over her notebook for her hot, hot Fandom High romance novel OMG WHEEE! notes for the classes she really doesn't have, looking about as sane -- if not less so -- than usual.

Now, what's another word for "turgid"?

Phoebe has a handful of notes and takes a seat near Parker.

"Why did I volunteer to be in a debate first thing Friday?"

"Because you, like me, forgot it was *first thing*, Friday?" Parker is looking over her notes on honor killings and getting a massive headache. She is also knocking back caffiene like it's going to be banned any minute.

"Are you ready?"

[ooc: and if you're not, I can send you some notes. :>!]

Phoebe shakes her head. "I have been reading and reading until my eyes have threatened to vote themselves off the island."

[[Oh yes, help?! With everything else going on I forgot about the Ethics debate.]]

Sighing, Parker slides some notes over to her, rubbing her eyes. "You've got the opening statement and rebuttal. You've got to refute and redefine the terms for murder, 'acceptable', and 'regardless of circumstances' if their opening speaker defines them in ways that dont' help our case. The rest is setting it up for the body of the argument. Make sense?"

[ooc: sent, albeit disorganized. Most of it is replying to the affirmative side. :>]

"So, we're trying to prove that murder is acceptable under certain circumstances..." Phoebe mutters as she reads over the notes. "I can set a precedent for practical application..."

"Right. Plus, if they either go with a broad definition of murder, we can punch holes in it using these points--" Parker taps a finger next to #6 on the outline, "--as not being legally defined as murder. We don't want to get into euthanasia, abortion, or the death penalty, because it gets unbearably messy and detailed. Keep it simple."

She yawns. "We're most likely not going to 'win.' No one in the classroom is going to want to be heard signing off on the idea that murder is ever acceptable. But if we argue our case better, Professor Maclay will have to give us credit for that."

Phoebe nods, wishing she had slept better.

"I thought my times in the debates was over after the election was over."

"So did I. Stupid ego. I couldn't back down after she gave me an out. Professor Maclay is sneaky," Parker admits, knocking back more caffiene, and wincing a little as she does so.

Phoebe nods. "She seems to know just the thing to say to get you in the net." Phoebe suddenly wishes she had a large Mocha.

Parker cracks her neck. "Well, let's hope the fact that the other team had to replace one of their debaters at the last second helps us out. I'm sorry for Sheppard, but glad for us."

[[Points 1-2 are yours, mostly. 3-5 are mine. 6 is a legal differentiation we'll bring up if we need it, I think. ]]
