Dating, Hooking Up and Sex, Class 3, Friday period 3

Dean had handwavily sent an email to everyone, telling them that today's class had been moved to Caritas.

When everyone arrived, they found Dean leaning back against the bar, munching on peanuts and talking to Chuck. He swallowed one last handful of nuts (not dirty) and turned to grin at everyone.

"Morning all, though for this class, it's probably better to pretend it's evening. Last week we talked about figuring out what you wanted. Today we're going to talk about what to do next -- namely find someone to do all the stuff on your list with." He grinned. "Today we're going to concentrate on the hooking up part of the class title.

"So you know what you want and you've found someone who is hot. Or interesting, or cute, or a green alien with three heads from Alpha Centuri. Whatever floats your boat. You've found someone you're attracted to and you want to get to know them better. There's tips I can give you on various kinds of approaches and lines and all that, but really the thing you have to always keep in mind in these situations is nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"Doesn't matter if you're looking for someone to jump your bones as soon as you exchange names or someone who you want to have a long slow courtship with lots of dating and handholding and blushing before you get to the good stuff. If you don't take that first step and talk to the person, nothing's going to happen except you pining from afar. So make a move. Stomp on your nerves, take a deep breath and go over and say hi.

"Once you get talking, the best thing you can do is pay attention -- real attention -- to the other person, to what they're saying and how they're saying it. Find things you have in common to talk about, and watch their body language -- you can learn a lot just by watching how they move in reaction to what you're saying.

"Humor works well to break the ice and settle the nerves, as does complimenting the person you're trying to hook up with. And I mean real compliments -- things that you're genuinely liking. You can throw fake things out there of course, but fake is fake. It always works a lot better when you're honest.

"And once you've got talking for a while, you'll be able to tell if this is something worth pursuing or if you should just cut your losses and leave. And if it's the former, there'll be a moment where it'll feel like the right time to make a move, ask for a date. Or a one night stand. Or whatever it is you're looking for. And that's when you take a deep breath and ask. Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

He paused to take a sip of his coffee that was sitting on the bar before continuing. "Now I can't give you a step by step, this is what you say and when you say it because every person, every situation is going to be different. What works for me won't necessarily work for you. So this next part I want to stress is merely an example of one way of hooking up and not the One True Hookup. But I wanted to show you something before turning you lose on each other so..." He gestured at Chuck. "Chuck and I are going to demonstrate how we do it."

Dean and Chuck then proceeded to have a back and forth that was part innuendo, part insult, part genuine conversation. After a few minutes of that, Dean turned back to the class, noting which students looked a hair away from facepalming themselves out of existence. "So that tends to be how the two of us go about things.

"Now it's your turn," he continued, rubbing his hands together. "Today's assignment is to find someone in the class you want to hit on -- or at least that you can pretend you want to hit on -- and do exactly that. No, I don't expect you to necessarily have the same goal in mind as Chuck and I did, or to approach it the way we did. Do what feels right for you. I'm not going to mark anyone down because they would rather quietly discuss philosophy or a good book instead of throwing around double entendres and innuendos. Just as long as I see that you're making an effort, you'll pass. So, have at it. Get venturing."

Warren was single, and interested, and... Shy. Which was sort of a specific to this particular Warren thing, if what he'd heard from Bobby was any indication, but at least once he got over the initial awkwardness, he liked to think that he was half decent at flirting. Hopefully, maybe, perhaps.

Until, of course, the handbag appeared beside him, advertising DADDY ISSUES loud and clear along the side.

"That," he mumbled, glaring at the handbag, "is not a conversation starter."

[Tacked up with a SP warning, as it's my dad's birthday and I'll be heading out for a few hours shortly.]

"Might be if you meet someone who has their own," Helen said a bit grimly. "Though mine looks more like a large suitcase."

Warren attempted a sympathetic smile in response to that as he swept the bag behind one wing.

"I left the suitcases back in my room," he replied. "I figured that nobody here really needs to read about them."

Helen nodded. "I'm not sure how I'll get any sleep tonight. They're covering the floor and bed."

"As if the alcoves aren't small enough already, huh? I can't stretch my wings in there."

In all fairness, he couldn't stretch his wings in his dorm room, either. Still, he was fairly certain that he was going to have to sleep standing up, tonight.

Helen reached out as if to touch his wing, then pulled her hand back and clasped it tightly with the other. "I imagine that must be difficult. I was considering sleeping at the stables tonight - or in the field there."

"Well, so long as the nice weather keeps up," Warren said, looking at her hand for a moment where she had clasped it, and then folding his wings at his back again.

A few more bits of baggage had cropped up behind him. CORRUPTION OF HEALTHY CELLULAR ACTIVITY was really a fetching carpet bag, once you managed to look past the feathery trim.

Warren ignored them.

"I'm sorry," she said, noticing his glance. "They just... they're so beautiful. I didn't mean to be rude or disrespectful."

"They're there," Warren replied, his tone hovering somewhere between awkward and firm. "They're just... there."

Another bag. Tried to saw them off.

Warren grabbed that one up pretty quickly and hid the words in his arms.

Her eyes went wide when she saw the bag. "You don't - I would -"

She stopped herself. "I imagine it can be very difficult. Especially a place that is not here."

And blushed when the backpack labeled ABOMINATION in bright red letters appeared next to her, bumping into the one reading Father tried to kill her.

Warren shrugged. It was a very communicative sort of shrug that said a million things all at once, and most of those things were along the lines of 'I don't want to talk about this.'

"Yeah. But you cope. That's the whole point, isn't it? You keep getting on?"

He was looking somewhere to the left, at a blank spot on the floor. Other people being able to see his baggage was bad enough. He didn't want to go ahead and read the innermost troubles of absolute strangers just because the island thought it was funny.

"It's either you keep moving forward, or else you let the world hold you back." He shrugged again. "I'm tired of letting the world hold me back. There are better things out there for me, I'm sure of it."

"I'm trying to find other options for myself," she admitted. "Since it doesn't seem I'll be allowed home and I'm not about to just lie down and do nothing."

"Well, here's the place to do it, if ever there was one," Warren decided. "You've pretty much got your pick of any world that ever existed. And any time in any of those worlds, I think. That's how the portals work, right?"

He was still learning, when it came to Fandom, yeah.

"I suppose," Helen said with a shrug. "Not sure how easy that is in practice, though."
