Dating, Hooking Up and Sex, Class 3, Friday period 3

Dean had handwavily sent an email to everyone, telling them that today's class had been moved to Caritas.

When everyone arrived, they found Dean leaning back against the bar, munching on peanuts and talking to Chuck. He swallowed one last handful of nuts (not dirty) and turned to grin at everyone.

"Morning all, though for this class, it's probably better to pretend it's evening. Last week we talked about figuring out what you wanted. Today we're going to talk about what to do next -- namely find someone to do all the stuff on your list with." He grinned. "Today we're going to concentrate on the hooking up part of the class title.

"So you know what you want and you've found someone who is hot. Or interesting, or cute, or a green alien with three heads from Alpha Centuri. Whatever floats your boat. You've found someone you're attracted to and you want to get to know them better. There's tips I can give you on various kinds of approaches and lines and all that, but really the thing you have to always keep in mind in these situations is nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"Doesn't matter if you're looking for someone to jump your bones as soon as you exchange names or someone who you want to have a long slow courtship with lots of dating and handholding and blushing before you get to the good stuff. If you don't take that first step and talk to the person, nothing's going to happen except you pining from afar. So make a move. Stomp on your nerves, take a deep breath and go over and say hi.

"Once you get talking, the best thing you can do is pay attention -- real attention -- to the other person, to what they're saying and how they're saying it. Find things you have in common to talk about, and watch their body language -- you can learn a lot just by watching how they move in reaction to what you're saying.

"Humor works well to break the ice and settle the nerves, as does complimenting the person you're trying to hook up with. And I mean real compliments -- things that you're genuinely liking. You can throw fake things out there of course, but fake is fake. It always works a lot better when you're honest.

"And once you've got talking for a while, you'll be able to tell if this is something worth pursuing or if you should just cut your losses and leave. And if it's the former, there'll be a moment where it'll feel like the right time to make a move, ask for a date. Or a one night stand. Or whatever it is you're looking for. And that's when you take a deep breath and ask. Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

He paused to take a sip of his coffee that was sitting on the bar before continuing. "Now I can't give you a step by step, this is what you say and when you say it because every person, every situation is going to be different. What works for me won't necessarily work for you. So this next part I want to stress is merely an example of one way of hooking up and not the One True Hookup. But I wanted to show you something before turning you lose on each other so..." He gestured at Chuck. "Chuck and I are going to demonstrate how we do it."

Dean and Chuck then proceeded to have a back and forth that was part innuendo, part insult, part genuine conversation. After a few minutes of that, Dean turned back to the class, noting which students looked a hair away from facepalming themselves out of existence. "So that tends to be how the two of us go about things.

"Now it's your turn," he continued, rubbing his hands together. "Today's assignment is to find someone in the class you want to hit on -- or at least that you can pretend you want to hit on -- and do exactly that. No, I don't expect you to necessarily have the same goal in mind as Chuck and I did, or to approach it the way we did. Do what feels right for you. I'm not going to mark anyone down because they would rather quietly discuss philosophy or a good book instead of throwing around double entendres and innuendos. Just as long as I see that you're making an effort, you'll pass. So, have at it. Get venturing."

Was Sam really ever going to stop facepalming? Probably not, but he was still here anyway.

To distract herself from the luggage that kept appearing-- because yes, that was interesting, but less so when it was labeled I AM NOT THAT MUCH SHORTER THAN YOU and TRAUMA? WHAT TRAUMA?, Scully headed over to Sam and climbed up on a barstool so she could look him in the eye.

She still felt like she needed heels.

"Why are you TA'ing this class if you hate it so much?"

Sam crouched down a little on his barstool, feeling just as uncomfortable towering over people while they sat. "Dean's my brother," he explained. "I don't really have a choice."

"Ahh." Scully sat up very straight, and did not wish for a booster chair. No. "The working theory was blackmail. So that covers all potential possibilities for it, if he's your brother." She dimpled at him a little. "You really hate it, don't you."

"Blackmail's kind of close. I lied to him about something really important, so this is sort of...punishment, or penance, however you want to phrase it." Sam laughed softly. "I don't like talking about sex. I've only dated three people in my whole life. It's a very personal thing to me, not something that I want to be public about."

"Payback." Scully did have brothers, after all. "I'm so sorry. At least he hasn't asked you to talk about anything?" Yet? Somehow, she had a feeling Dean would get his brother to do that before the end of the semester.

"Hopefully he won't, or it's all going to come out jumbled," Sam said. "And flustered and mumbling, and no one wants that."

Poor Sam. "Well, but you're the-- alternative, to your brother. Since most of us," Scully looked around at her flailing classmates, "can't hope to date our own cars the first time we go to a bar." She added, very dryly, "Many of them might feel more comfortable asking you questions than asking Dean. I imagine he would intimidate some of them."

A small purse stamped with I Will Shoot You If You Patronize Me plopped down on the bar-top, and Scully sighed.

Sam spotted the bag and gave Scully a sympathetic smile. "I definitely wouldn't be patronizing. But I give very different advice than Dean. That said, if you have any questions, I can try to answer them? If it's something I know."

Scully had to facepalm, then sigh. "I don't actually need this class," she muttered. Then she forced herself to look directly at Sam and said, "But the offer is appreciated. Seriously."

"I think you do need this class. If nothing else, you'll be fully aware that guys like Dean are out there, and now you'll know how to spot them," Sam pointed out.

Scully's look was a mixture of Seriously? and confusion, with a dollop of amusement.

"So I can let them drag me back to their caves? I mean, cars?"

...that could be fun.

"Well, Dean would never drag anyone back unwillingly. For all his talk, he really is good to the people he hooks up with. Uh, I assume," Sam said quickly. "I mean, no one's ever complained." That had sounded better in his head.

Scully managed not to choke on her drink, and gave Sam a mischievous look. "So, that's a testimonial from a long-term witness?"

"Yes, exactly," Sam said with a nod as he regained some of his composure. "And there really are things to consider when, like, your laptop turns into a person and you wake up in bed together. Sex in Fandom is kind of a special thing."

"...I don't think I'll be having sex with anyone any time soon," Scully admitted, and then the UST WITH BEST FRIEND dropped to the countertop again. Followed by Kidnnapped by a psycho that hopefully got slapped off before Sam got a look at it, although it did leave UST there, glaring. Redly.

"And that's fine," Sam said, trying to sound reassuring, especially since whoa, did he remember how that UST one felt. "No one is going to make you have sex here, or make you feel uncomfortable for not doing it. It's totally okay."

Scully struggled internally with a feeling of extreme hilarity because Sam was being so sweet. And if she'd actually been fifteen, she would have adored him for being so reassuring about all this. She bit her lip hard to keep the smile internal and her expression bland, then said sincerely, "Thank you. It's... it's good to hear that. I wasn't planning on it anyway, but--" And a little of her real feelings, connected with that baggage on the floor seeped through. "It's always good to know someone would be looking out for me."

Chuck looked way too happy about being in here today and was enjoying Sam's misery immensely.
