Arts & Crafts, Period 2, 5-28

There were bins of felt, yarn, googly eyes, and other accoutrements set out on the tables today, along with a couple of hot glue guns and, most worrying, a sewing machine. "Good morning, everyone," Steve said. "I hope you're enjoying life in the cabins. Today we're going to make finger puppets, because, well, because they're fun. I've supplied several different patterns, so just pick whichever one you like and you can get started. If you need help with the sewing machine, ask me or one of your classmates. If you can't use a sewing machine but can manage needle and thread that's available, too. Alternately, you can glue the edges of the puppet together. It can get kind of messy, but it's certainly less messy than sewing your fingers." He had a first aid kit standing by just in case, though. "Have fun, guys."

While Jonas didn't know how to make these at first, he picked it up fast for some strange reasons and had several finger puppets made by the end of the class.

They weren't great by any means but they amused him and he was proud of himself.

Ooooh. As someone who had a new appreciation for her hands thanks to having to communicate with them so often, Ariel thought these sounded particularly fun. And while it might have been wiser to stick to the patterns, she felt enough homesickness to attempt to try to make all of her finger puppets resemble her undersea friends back home.

Sort of. Maybe if she told you about them and then you squinted really hard.

But whatever. Ariel was a creative soul and a free spirit. She felt she couldn't properly express her artisty with constricting patterns and rules.

Even if the end result was...sort of special.

It was also really nice to get her mind off of how she failed at something that should be a cinch, and the work itself provided a nice backdrop to get her brain working on new plots for kisses.

Didi wasn't much of a seamstress, but the Halloween puppet patterns all seemed cute and within her skill set. She started amassing felt (and, for some reason, glitter) to make wee ghosts and black cats. The finished projects actually looked pretty cool, in an off-kilter kind of way.

Kurt avoided the hot glue guns like an avoidy thing. He did NOT need that in his fur.

He wasn't all that great with a needle and thread, but he managed to sew together a few cute little finger puppets so that they wouldn't fall apart again.

He added clothes and eyes and things to the puppets, but the tiny little suitcases all labeled "I LOOK LIKE A TOTAL FREAK" just appeared on their own.

Yes, Delirium was doing the Puppy one; she was that predictable on such things.

She was also safely doing the work without sewing her fingers, but her attention span might betray her eventually.
