Self Defense and Kickassery for Dummies; Thursday Fifth Period [3rd. Class]

Today, the dojo didn't look like a dojo. Well, maybe because it wasn't a dojo anymore; advantages of teaching in a place with awesome technological resources, Faith could dictate her little attempts of classes anywhere she wanted. And hey, she still wanted to make a class outside in the field. Nothing like the fresh air of an ending day to get everyone in the mood. But, later.

Students entering the Danger Shop would find their teacher going over the complicated Kata she had showed them, and honestly, it was a sight to behold for a minute; Faith made it look as easy as walking, and she was probably doing it better than the demonstration video she had shown them. A single look at each entering student would suffice to tell from her intentions. Get to warm up or wait until the class starts.

And as expected, the time for the class arrived, with the already customary gathering at the center of the mat. "Today we get into the action."

Yes, that sounded promising.

"Well, not the really hardcore, interesting action, but the first bits of causing pain to other people. In self defense, of course." She had been close to forget that part. "We are going to get into the basics of Judo. So," she cleared her throat here, mentally thanking Wikipedia:

"Judo (meaning "gentle way") is a modern Japanese martial art and combat sport, that was created in Japan in 1882 by Dr Kano Jigoro." Maybe a little snort here. "Modern, alright. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata), and now you see why I insist on that sort of stuff, don't you? And are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori)." A moment to let the information sink in the young -and not so young- minds of the students. "The judo also is the point from which a number of other disciplines started, and it's the model of Japanese martial arts. This is the best way to get an idea of what to do and how to do it if you want to inflict pain or stop someone from hurting you, or anyone."

She motioned at the extension of the mat, this one wider than the dojo's tatami surface. "So, pick a partner, check the moves, and then get at it. I'm here to make comments, snark, and maybe allow one or two of you to punch me, again. Have fun kiddos."

[Wait for the OCD plz OCD is a go!]

Kennedy had gotten started on her warmup as soon as she'd made it into class; since the routine was second nature to her by now, she kept an analytical eye on Faith's movements while she stretched. I'm gonna need to watch how I shift my balance right there... gotta put some more snap into that kick... check.

Why was this lecture about three hundred percent cooler than it was coming from her Watcher? Oh, right. The Slayer thing.

Effy was still feeling like a fucking moron doing this, but she was finding it smoother than the first couple of weeks.

That wasn't gonna change that she'd be sticking to the simpler of the options, thanks.

Alex had taken a few moments to stare at Faith as she warmed up. There was no way she could do that kata.

Well, yeah, Kennedy was going for the kickass kata. Duh. So she didn't make it look nearly as kickass as Faith did, but whatever. Not the point. She'd work her way up to that. Sort of.

If she was a little less energetic about it than usual? Yesterday had been a long day.

Kate was doing the middle difficulty kata, and she was doing pretty well with it, too. Had to be thankful for the dancer thing.

It was nowhere near perfect, of course, but she was making progress.

Kennedy was more interested in hitting things than immobilizing them, but Constance had been a real hardass about making her learn this stuff. And it was going to save her ass in a blown-up sewer tunnel someday, so. But hey, if Faith wanted them to learn it, okay, she was down with that.

Yeah, she was in Serious Business mode again, but totally game for the exercise.

One slightly tired-looking TA here, yup; she'd been trying to put herself through some basic paces with some of the new gear she'd gotten for her birthday this morning, and man, that SOLDIER sword took some serious work.

She had a long, long way to go before she'd be able to use it; that was painfully evident. Did this mean Kennedy was willing to be patient about making progress along said long, long way? Not really, no. Thus, tired.

She'd be feeling that salle session tomorrow morning, too. Ow.

Chloe was watching everything that Faith did and wondering if she would ever be able to do that even after years of training.

Chloe wasn't dumb, so she started with the beginning kata to make sure that she was warmed up. When she was satisfied by how she was doing, she started working slowly with the middle kata.

Chloe hadn't yet gotten brave enough to actually ask people to spar with her.

So, she'd be over here, looking around for someone that looked like they were waiting for a partner. That way, she wasn't intruding on them and she was willing to work out.

She'd get to that asking thing eventually.

Ellie still didn't think she was ready for the more advanced kata, so she stuck with the simpler one for now.
