The Great Outdoors | Friday | Period 1

Class was, once again, being held outside. This time, they were assembled on the Rocky Bits, near Selkie Peak. Fraser looked content and comfortable and waited while everyone got settled.

"Good morning," he greeted, smiling at everyone. "Welcome back and I hope you've all worn a good, strong pair of shoes because today, we're talking about hikes. Now, when I say the word hike, most everyone is going to think of some painful slog through nature with a too large backpack and mosquitoes attacking at every corner. Now, that can happen, yes, but hike is a very multi faceted word. There are several types of hiking including backpacking, dog hiking, freehiking, hillwalking, waterfalling, and Nordic walking. They all mean different things though they encompass the same general idea. You're essentially trekking across natural environments."

Here, Fraser paused and clasped his hands behind his back. "Depending on the length and breadth of your hike, you do want to be prepared. If you're going for a short hike, you still want to bring first aid supplies, a cellular phone, flares, a change of clothes, and a blanket in case you do get turned around and get lost so you can be prepared for the elements. For longer hikes, you'd also bring these things but in greater numbers and perhaps in more specific terms. Hiking is a great form of exercise that allows you to see beautiful landscapes for free. So today, that's what we're doing. You're hiking. Grab a backpack," Fraser said, nodding to the assembled supplies, "and start hiking. Go to the Preserve, go to the beach, go around Selkie Peak, it's up to you. You can go alone or as pairs and you can go as slow or as fast as you'd like. Just enjoy the environment around you."

With that, Fraser set the students loose on their hikes.

Oooh, so class today was basically how Gabrielle spent large chunks of her life! She couldn't help giving the contents of her backpack a bit of an odd look, though; that was an awfully long list of supplies to carry along. A blanket and first aid, she got, but all that other stuff? You needed that?

After spending most of the week indoors, Lion-o was excited to be outside again and ready to go hiking. He made a cursory check of his backpack while listening to the lecture.

Firekeeper inspected the contents of her pack, amused by how full it was. As far as she was concerned, "hiking supplies" usually consisted of her bow, a quiver of arrows, and perhaps a waterskin.
