Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 05/17 ].

"Good afternoon, my eager home ec'ers!" Aquaman greeted the class with his usual gusto and smile, standing amid a home ec classroom that looked like a fabric store had imbibed about five hundred drinks too many and ralphed all over the place. "I hope your weekends were good ones, productive and life-fulfilling! And I hope your Mondays have also gotten you prepared for another fun and exiting week in the adventure that is summer camp! But enough of that! Let us march onward to our next exciting chapter in this book of the economics of the home!"

With that, Aquaman reached back, a dramatic pose like one about to pull forth a sword to cause great damage to evil doers everywhere, and then brandished...

...a sewing needle.

With a little bit of orange thread still dangling loose from the eye.

"Darning! Sewing! Mending! Our clothing is what keeps us warm, it's got our backs covered, it can be a distinguishing feature and it keeps us from indecently exposing ourselves to both the elements and our fellow compatriates, although, admittedly," he put a hand to his mouth as if divulging in a secretive whisper, although his tone didn't really drop much, "some of us more than others. So we need to know how to take care of them. One way to do so is...well, to sew! Fix up all those little holes and tears before they become big holes and tears! Allow me to demonstrate!"

Which he did, whipping out a large orange shirt that appeared to have gills on it, and narrating as he showed the class the basics of how to sew, not only holes in your clothing, but also a button.

"Now, give it a try! As you can see, we have many clothes in need of mending!" It seemed beyond Aquaman to think that some of these clothes had been ripped and ruined for a reason. "There exists among them a varying degree of distress, so pick one you feel comfortable with and darn those darn clothes!"

"If you feel that mere hemming, stitching, sewing and buttoning is a little basic for your own personal skills, I also have available some different material and detailing accessories, and you may spend some time trying to sew your own superhero costume! Remember to keep in mind your color choices from last week! And you want it to be bold and adventurous, just like you!"

"So have at it! Really sew this clothing who's boss!"

Yes, he thought that was funny. Shhh.

Sewing looked complicated. And, considering he was already caught up in his own head, Bod feared for his fingers.

This didn't look too hard, Kitty thought. It was just putting a needle through fabric. What was so difficult about that?

Tara knew how to do most of this, so there wasn't a lot of note-taking coming from her seat. She was faintly stunned Aquaman could rouse so much enthusiasm for mending.

Rilla was well acquainted with sewing, which was very comforting after a class full of zombies and gremlins.

Sookie wasn't the best at sewing, not by a long shot, but she could do some simple stitches and Gran had made sure she knew how to darn socks, at least.

Gran's instruction had been a bit different from this.

For as generally composed and poised as she looked most of the time, Sara seemed distinctly uncomfortable with the subject of today's class.

One might almost say she looked daunted by the prospect.

And well she might be -- Sara and sewing always met with some unspeakable disaster.

SEWING. Kurt wasn't particularly fond of sewing.

But he WAS in a business where clothes would get ripped often, and he wouldn't always have someone else around to sew them back together for him. So he took careful notes and tried to learn as best as he could.

Bod found a rather raggedy piece of clothing and went to work trying to repair it. He managed to prick his fingers about five times and really only made the material look worse.

Eventually, he did manage to sew a small hole shut and he considered that a major success.

Dandelion looked at the ragged shirt in from of her with a big hole and frowned for a moment or two.

Then she pulled some duct tape out of her backpack and slapped some on the whole.

"DONE!"

[identity profile] notavalleygirl.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, who would do this to fabric? Were these things created on a dare? Was someone taking their hatred of life out on clothing that couldn't fight back?

Kitty tried to save the garments anyway, even if the kind thing would be to put them out of their misery, though she wasn't doing too well. Once she even tried to figure out if phasing her hand through the fabric would maybe make it easier or faster or whatever, but once that ended in her pricking herself with the needle, she decided this was not worth blood.

There was an unfortunate hole in the stomach of the dress Tara grabbed -- the weird thing was, it looked like it had been put there on purpose. She brought the edges of the cloth together to close the hole, planning to add straps if she had extra time.

Calvin stared at the clothing. Clearly it was all part of an evil plot of some description!

Why an evil plot would involve horrible clothes, Calvin did not know, only that it did.

Despite the rather...bold (http://www.uglydress.com/redslutty.html)...color of the dress Rilla had found, she was pleased to see it was at least the correct length.

The sleeves, though...all wrong. She ripped them off and tried to see what she could do to fix them.

Sookie snagged a rather poofy (http://www.uglydress.com/wedbeldres.html) dress, and attempted to start ripping out the crinoline, at least.

It was...sort of an improvement.

Emmett was never going to be Edna Mode, but as a seamstress, he could pass. Er, seamster? That made him think of truck driving unions, though, and big guys in grease-smeared coveralls, and then he lost track of what he was supposed to be doing. Oh, sewing on buttons. Right!

No piece of clothing worth saving, with a sense of its own self-preservation, would ever look to Sara as a probable saviour.

It was just as well that none of the articles of clothing she picked out were, in her estimation, worth saving. She gave it a game try anyhow, but her stitches were ragged and uneven, she'd managed to sew several pleats together, and she pricked her finger rather hopelessly shortly after she realized she'd badly underestimated the amount of thread she'd need.

[identity profile] bamf-tastic.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Kurt picked up a garment of some kind... well, presumably it was a dress, but there were far too many holes in it. He couldn't figure out which of the holes were for the neck and arms, which were accidental tears, and which were just there for decoration. So, he started sewing up holes at random and just was glad he wasn't going to have to try it on.

Considering his talents with sewing, Bod was sure this would go extremely well. His fingers, already sore, got pricked a few more times while he tried to get started on his own costume.

There was no spandex involved.

Dandelion's costume was fairly simple. It was a black and white striped sheet of cloth that she tied around her neck.

"I am... the ANTI-VIKING!" she declared.

Kitty debated raising her hand and saying she had a costume already, but figured that just meant she didn't have to worry too much about what she did to this one.

Tim Gunn would be like so sad here. So sad.

Calvin? Who was Calvin? Certainly not the man in the red mask with the towel around his neck.

Rilla spent far too much time on that website was unhappy with how little clothing seemed to be used for super-heroing, but she was determined to make it work.

Well, at least it was green (http://marvel.com/create_your_own_superhero/1069441/name/still%20me/hero/rilla).

Kurt tried to put together a costume that looked like his X-Men uniform, but it just turned out looking really cheesy and stupid. He was starting to have a lot more appreciation for whoever it was that made their uniforms.
