Birth of TV Comedy, Monday First Period

"Hey, good morning," Mitchell said to the students as they piled in. "We've got a small group this time, but I like that. After all, television comedy isn't for the faint of heart." He grinned a little. "In the next few classes, I'll be putting you all through a vigorous sitting of all sorts of comedies. The good and the bad. Don't let Television Without Pity close up your hearts to the power of the sitcom."

There was a little amused irony in his voice, yes. "But this is introduction week. First, let me introduce your teaching assistants for this period. The talented Kate Gregson, and the dashing Jack Priest." A little more of that irony, but he meant it fondly.

"To start things off, I get the pleasure of catching you during your very first round of introductions of the session, so... name, favorite style of humor, and tell me a joke."

He pointed. "We'll start with you, then."

Mitchell technically hadn't told Jack to introduce himself, and he decided to take advantage of that by lounging as regally as one could manage in a beanbag chair and not saying a word.

It was more fun to watch everyone else, anyhow. He was still sizing most of the students up, and doing very important things like trying to look like he could not possibly have spent most of the last week as a terrier.

Kate had no idea Jack had been a terrier. And that was a sad, sad thing.

She did notice the other thing though. "So, 'dashing' was enough of an introduction?"

"Is there really anything else to say?" Jack wanted to know, with the hint of a grin. "Besides, I graduated. It's everyone else's turn to say their names fifty times this week."

"You graduated, and yet we still didn't get rid of you. How unfortunate," Kate replied, smirking. Not that she was in any hurry to get rid of him. He could be amusing.

She nodded vaguely in Mitchell's general direction. "Not sure what his excuse is, though. He didn't actually introduce himself either."

"I'm heartbroken you're so ready to be rid of me, Kate," Jack said, smirking right back. "Eager to be the only monkey in the classroom?"

He slid his eyes toward Mitchell. "He didn't, did he? Perhaps he's gone from using one name to using none."

"There are no monkeys in this classroom, Jack," she replied, sternly, before shrugging. "Maybe he'll start answering to 'hey, you' now."

As if he didn't already.

Kate tilted her head to the side, thinking. "Mm, I think that's just gonna make him look up. Of course, we could just... stare expectantly at him after he does."

Jack thought about that. "Would that count as disrupting the class?"

The ... very serious academic class about telling jokes, yes.

And then Jack held up his hands and simply, deliberately snapped.
