Surviving & Thriving -- Monday -- Second Period.

When the students filed into the Danger Shop today, they'd be met with two teachers, standing at the back of the room. The first to speak was the man, dressed in his Civil War era military uniform.

No particular reason, really. It was what had been clean this morning when he'd gotten out of bed.

"Good Morning, class, and welcome to Fandom Island, America, on the planet Earth, in the year 2010. That would be AD, not BC, though I can't imagine that if any of you have come that far you'd be aware you were from BC in the first place." He allowed himself a small, self-indulgent smile at that statement before pressing on. "If you're new to the island, I assure you, this isn't some sort of elaborate hazing ritual. If you're not, you can join us in being amused at the consternation that your classmates are likely to be feeling this week. I'm Captain Nathan Algren, from here in America, circa 1877. I've done my time figuring this place out already."

"I am Lady Ghanima Atreides," his companion began, bright blue eyes twinkling with amusement as she stepped forward, long formal gown rustling. "I am from the planet of Arrakis, over 21,000 years in the future from now. Yes, my eyes are natural, and yes, I am technically an alien, since I was born on another planet."

"Captain Algren and I are here to help make your transition to living on Fandom Island as seamless as possible, given the many diverse places and times our residents hail from. We cannot promise to teach you everything in seven weeks -- that would be impossible -- but we do intend to give you a basic grounding in 21st century living, with a Fandom twist."

"For any questions you have that you do not feel comfortable asking us, our teaching assistant, Miss Annja Creed, is here to provide answers. Miss Creed recently graduated from Fandom High, and should be able to provide a student's perspective to the school."

"Today, we would like to simply get an idea of who it is that we're dealing with, so that we can adjust our syllabus to better suit your needs," Algren added, crossing his arms over his chest, "and so your first assignment today will be simple enough. Introduce yourselves. Name, age, where and when you're from, and one thing that's surprised you already, since coming to Fandom Island. When you've finished with that, we've set out some sheets of paper. If you feel so inclined, please feel free to write down one thing that you hope to learn about this island, and we'll see what we can do to accommodate before the term is through."

"Once you have accomplished that, we will start with our first lesson; electricity," Ghanima stated. "You may have noticed already that we do not use candles, torches, glow-globes, or gas-lamps for light. Instead, with the flick of a switch, lights and other appliances are powered via an electric current. You'll find light switches by the door of almost any room, but we will teach you about two very important appliances that run on electricity that you'll learn to know and love. The television, a source of entertainment programing, and your alarm clock, which will make sure you awaken in time to attend your classes."

Raven had been in Fandom for a year, but she had figured that the class certainly wouldn't hurt, and she liked Lady Ghanima. But today she was being as quite and unnoticeable as she possibly could, still shaken by what she had found out last night.

Now Goose knew why Commander Walsh had signed him up for this class, he wondered if Walsh had known what Fandom was like before deciding to send him to the school.

Granted, Fandom was already shaping up to be better than any other place that he had been to and so for now he wasn't going to think about what Walsh may or may not have told him.

Christian knew perfectly well what an electric light bulb was, so he was feeling rather smugly ahead of the game as he took notes.

... even if he still couldn't understand how people could come from other planets.

Rilla, wearing one of her school dresses (pleated skirt, middy collar), glanced nervously around the room for anyone who might be dressed as she was. Hearing what year Captain Algren hailed from put her a little more at ease.

Diana decided that this class would be a perfect chance to start a "my home" versus "Fandom" insanity-off. She was already taking notes in her notebook about which place was mostly likely to turn her into an animal.

Switches! Of course! That was why the lights didn't turn on in her dorm room, even though Uhura yelled progressively louder. She felt kind of dumb for not figuring that one out, but decided that it was due to fatigue of processing everything else during the picnic.

Uhura tapped her notes on her PADD. It looked enough like those laptop things she kept seeing, and she was not into killing trees with all that paper in those notebooks.

Jason was trying not to stare at the teachers but really, he thought it was crazy enough being thirty years in the future. People from other planets and centuries back was going to take a minute to sink in.

"I am Raven," Raven said quietly when her turn came. "I am sixteen years old, and I am from a place called Azarath, which lies between dimensions, though my mother was from Earth. I have been surprised by many things here, especially...meeting people from the future." The admission was what was on her mind, but she hoped vague enough to not be asked about specifics.

Goose awkwardly stood up when it was his turn, "Shane Gooseman, Goose," he said, "fourteen, haven't stayed in a place long enough to call home and its the year 2102 where I'm from," he paused in relation to the last question, "probably that people here come from different time periods,"

"My name is Christian," Christian said. "I'm 17 and from London. 1895. That's the thing that surprises me -- I didn't know people went traveling about in time. I'm still getting my head around it."

"I'm Rilla Blythe," Rilla said, remembering what Sookie had urged about not going by Bertha. "I will be fourteen in July, and I hail from Glen St. Mary on Prince Edward Island." Also remembering Miss Cornelia's thoughts on Yankee education, she tacked on a, "Canada. And at home it is 1913." Her big hazel eyes fixed pleadingly on Captain Algren. "And they gave me a boy roommate!"

She'd get over that eventually. Maybe.

Beka was instantly why she'd rather have the first week of the semester be over. At least she'd a purple eyed cat at her feet, purring softly and distracting her from her nerves.

"I'm Beka Cooper," she said. "I'm eighteen and I'm from Corus. Tis the Capital of Tortall. Tis the year 247 there, but that means naught related to this world. I was surprised to meet someone here who's from my world's future."

"I'm Diana, from Lucan, Ontario, modern day, and I'm sixteen. And something that surprised me about Fandom..." Diana pondered the questions. "Aliens." Which also gave Fandom a point in her mental battle.

Uhura stood up, squared her shoulders, her ponytail swinging backwards. She smoothed her skirt down carefully.

"I'm Uhura. I'm 17 years old. I'm from Nairobi, in Kenya, the year 2252. The one thing about Fandom that has surprised me so far is that there are people that use magic to do things instead of technology."

Uhura sat down quickly.

"I am James, Squire to Prince Arutha con Doin of the Kingdom of the Isles on the planet Midkemia" he began. "Near as I can figure, I'll be sixteen come this Midsummer's," he said with a grin, "and someone thought it'd be a laugh to pair me up with a girl roommate." The grin vanished.

Assignment #1: Tell Us What You Need

If you feel so inclined, please feel free to write down one thing that you hope to learn about this island, so that your teachers can attempt to accommodate you.

If you are illiterate, this would be the time to let a teacher (or TA!) know, so that you can be accommodated in the future. Don't worry, you are not the first or last student to need alternative arrangements.

Activity: Setting your alarm & navigating the telly!

At stations around the room are the following items: One television, one remote control, one television guide, and one alarm clock, complete with instruction booklet in four languages that you probably don't read and two pages about how to set the clock that are actually in English. Grab a partner, find a channel on the television that you can both agree on, and then set your alarm clock to go off at 11:00, the same time the class ends!

Remote controls Raven had already learned to use. She knew exactly how to turn on the TV and tune it to the channel that Rumor Gal was on (sadly, not during the day, however).
