The Lawn | Noon Onward!

With graduation festivities occurring over the weekend, the school administration expected most of the graduation guests to begin arriving today. To ensure guests felt welcomed, Barney's student council minions had set up a small gathering on the lawn where the guests could arrive, mingle, and feign relaxation before heading off with their graduates.

Or where they could all hear about how George got the makeouts with his girl the night before. Someone was a little chatty while hefting the tables and chairs that would serve guests well for getting a load off after travel, and Barney thought it was a tale worth sharing. For the hungry and forgetful, there were finger foods and nametags spread out on a long table. It was time to get the all-weekend grad party started!

"You just said you would've left before a month ago!" Griff was letting his exasperation show more than he would've liked. It didn't go well with the cool attitude he was working for. "What am I supposed to think here, Fi?"

She groaned.

"No, what I said was that if it'd been my choice, I'd have seen you in person before I had to leave. It was late when I got the phonecall and I figured you were asleep."

Sigh.

"And I didn't know I'd be gone a month."

It seemed some things never changed. One of them being the complete communication failure between these two.

"Yeah, well, it's not like I'm pissed about it," Griff shrugged again. "You aren't obligated to tell me anything." Even if there was still that little part of him that would've liked to have heard.

"Just because I'm not 'obligated' doesn't mean I wouldn't have done it," she said in reply.

She let that sit for a minute, since she had a feeling arguing the point wasn't going to help anything, and tried for another topic.

"What've you been up to, then?"

Taking away the obligation nullified the sting he would've felt otherwise at her lack of notice. It saved him some face.

"Same as always. Training, reading, classes. Well, not this week. We're between torturous ethics courses for the moment."

She winced for the entirely mundane suck of annoying classes.

"Sad to say, I would have preferred 'Love and Romance'. Are you staying the summer?"

Griff snorted, "Where would I go?" Yeah, it was kind of a painful thought.

"There are other people's worlds," she said, and instantly wished she hadn't.

"I'm not going anywhere either. They're done with me for the year."

At least for now.

"So far as you know," he added helpfully, eyeing her with some wary interest.

"Precisely," she agreed with a soft huff of breath. Not huffy, just a huff.

"Right." Griff didn't know what to make of Fiona being back. On the one hand, he was really glad to see her. On the other...there was some strange history to consider. "Welcome back."

He got a wry smile for that.

"Thank you."

"See that? We just managed polite," Griff replied with a smirk.

Her face scrunched up before she couldn't help the laugh.

"Oh weird."

Dammit, she wasn't supposed to encourage him to be amused. Griff was going to get an earful from Karev on this. "Call it growth or something."

"Growth into what, I wonder," said with just a hint of teasing.

"Certainly not normal, well-adjusted people," he pointed out. "We're late on that."

"I don't think the seeds were planted for that sort of harvest," she had to agree.

"Much more likely to be those ill-fitting pants they sell for seventy-five percent off at the shops. You know, where one leg is shorter or the pocket was sewn shut." At least he had a sense of humor about his own failings.

"There are trousers where they're sewn shut on purpose," and Fiona crossed her arms thoughtfully.

"Though now you've made me imagine a mismatched pants tree. It's a very odd image."

Griff shook his head, "Be careful, you say things like that and they sprout up around campus. Meanwhile, all our pants disappear from the laundry."

"You know I don't have to be too careful. It'd really only be terribly inconvenient for the boys."

"I end up with no pants and you'll have me banging on your door to complain," Griff warned.

Very smooth eyebrow-raise.

"With no pants?"

...Apparently so. "Not like I'd be worried for showing off my shorts." She'd seen them before.
