The Perfect Crime [Thursday, Period Five]

"Good afternoon, kids," Rick greeted the class, a broad grin on his face. "It's time for your finals, and I hope you've come up with something impressive for me and the rest of class."

He gestured to the front of the class where both a white-board and a large computer display were situation. "How things work is that you are going to present your plan for the perfect crime to the rest of the class," he explained. "Then, after you've done that, the other members of the class will ask you questions in an attempt to poke holes in your plan, to which you will then respond. This will be done in a polite and respectful manner, and participation in your classmates Q-and-A time will have an impact on your final mark."

He pointed at a random student. "You first."

Hayley stood in front of the class, more than a little nervous.

"I decided not to do the project," she announced. "Since I'm at this school instead of being in jail, I don't think Gotham City Police want me planning any crimes."

She paused.

"Besides, there's no such thing as a perfect crime. There's always gonna be a Batman or a Batgirl who's smarter than even the smartest criminal. The perfect crime is... not committing one at all. That's the only way you're gonna really get away with it."

"Unless you've an evil robot," Alice suggested helpfully. "One that can't be traced to one's self."

It was possible that Alice had missed the point entirely, yes.

"Well gee," Hayley said, laughing. "Why didn't anyone tell me we got an evil robot for this?"

"Doesn't mean you can't plan one," Elle reasoned. "Just means you can't actually go and follow through on it."

Elle's logic was shaky but in this case, actually correct.

"You tryin' to get me to fail?" Hayley reacted, making a face.

"No! I'm just saying, they don't want you going out and being all criminal-y, and planning one for a class is different. 'sides, I wouldn't let you go out and actually do anything."

"Well I just didn't want to risk it," Hayley said. "Commissioner Wayne is scary."

Alice's plan was certainly elaborate. It featured a great deal of untraceable killer robots, an invisible cloak, evil twins, clones, and a plot that would make most chess games look simple.

Which was especially amusing, as the crime she'd chosen was theft of a number of cakes from a local bakery.

Alice did not believe in small measures.

Elle's plan involved half a dozen diagrams, shorting out a security system, and led to breaking into an important building.

Yes, Elle, plan to break into the building YOU WERE RAISED IN. That's real smart. What? It was what she knew!
