Love & Romance, Hollywood Style [Period 4, Class 15]

"All right, it's finals day," Drake said, gleefully rubbing his hands together. "Oh, relax, this is easy. All I want you to do is tell me a love story. It can be epic, it can be tragic, it can be comedic, but make it a true one. And then tell me what Hollywood would do to the story if they made it into a movie. Got it? Go. Oh, and for bonus points, tell me your favorite quote about love."

Kennedy, looking a touch more rumpled than she generally cared to thanks to hurriedly showering and changing into cargo pants and a hoodie that had been stashed in her gym locker just before class, was admitting to no such thing. She would concede, albeit somewhat grudgingly, that he wasn't that bad, though.

Didi told a version of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice that dwelt rather heavily on how, if Orpheus had listened to his aunt or his father and let the dead stay dead, the worst of the story could have been avoided. She stopped just after the bard watched his bride turn to salt -- the rest of what had happened to Orpheus was in no way a love story.

"If I was making it into a movie with a happy ending," Didi finished thoughtfully, "I'd either say 'the end' just before the wedding, or let them reunite once they got out of the underworld. The real story's just too sad."

"I like the thing from that old song," Didi said. " 'The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.' "

"Right, so." Priestly was tempted to go on the epic love story of Courtney Love and Curt Kobain and how she betrayed him to a super secret organization which planned his death -- but yeah, even he had to admit that probably wasn't true. So he went with something closer to home. "My friend Trucker is head over heels in love with the woman who runs the crystal shop across the street from his grill. He's so in love with her, in fact, that he can't speak a single word whenever she comes by and is convinced that she doesn't know he exists. This is, of course, full of crap, but hey, old people. What can you do?" Priestly shrugged eloquently, then went on. "Now, if Hollywood got a hold of this story, well, either Trucker would come up with some cunning but ultimately underhanded plan that involved iffy consent issues to try and win her over, then ultimately learn to 'be himself' and win her over, all the while accompanied by a smack talking sidekick best friend who occasionally gets to spout gems of wisdom. Or, alternately, it'd be discovered in a side plot that he and Zo, the lady who owns the crystal shop, actually went to high school together, and she's been in love with him all through the decades in between and will accept him for all his faults and foibles because while he thinks he's not good enough for her, she already knows about it all and loves him anyway, and then they'd probably, like, get married naked on horseback on the beach in some deeply hippie ceremony and we'd all stand there paired off as cute, white, heterocentric beachniks." Priestly snorted. "But what are the odds of that happening?"

"The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees. The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas," Emma began, before explaining the story of The Highwayman.

"Many people consider it a romantic love story, although I consider it a study in reckless and moronic behaviour, but if Hollywood were going to remake it, one or the other would somehow survive, and go on to avenge their True Love. Or they'd both somehow escape death and run off together, and live happily ever after."

Robin considered love between best friends to be totally worth the title. So he told the story of his friend Beatrice and their summer together. And how he liked to think that the hollywood version would end much happier than the real story had. He hadn't seen Bridge To Terabithia Gateway to Beratithia.

After handwavily telling a story, Ellie tried to think of an interesting love quote. After a moment of thought, she said, "Love is a journey not a destination."

"So, once upon a time, there was a city, a vigilante, and a cat thief," Dinah said. "The vigilante was the city's protector, there to right wrongs and avenge the death of his parents at the hands of criminals through justice against crazy mobsters and a corrupt police force... and the cat thief was there to get him to lighten up and have fun, and oh yeah, steal diamonds. And jade statues. And bearer bonds. And tease him that he couldn't catch her. Which just made him want to all the more, although whether he was ever going to arrest her or not..." Dinah grinned, then sobered. "And they got together, and sometimes they fought side-by-side against the crazier villains, and sometimes they had huge trust issues because of being on opposite sides of the law. Which eventually made them break up, although they never forgot each other." And Catwoman eventually had a baby she never told Batman about... but no way was Dinah mentioning that. "And in real life, one of the vigilante's enemies killed the cat thief to get revenge on him, and it broke his heart, and he left the city he loved, never to return, after putting the criminal responsible away. If Hollywood got a hold of it, the cat thief would have lived, and retired from her life of crime, and they would have lived happily ever after fighting crime together." She paused. "Unless this was a different type of movie, and they wanted a sequel, in which case I guess she would have disappeared after getting revenge on the guy who killed her, leaving the vigilante to miss her and look for her on every rooftop, and maybe see her again in the next movie."

Maaan. She really preferred the Hollywood version.

"'Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,'" Dinah said, then turned pink, realizing how much that might say about her only after she'd said it. "From A Midnight's Summer Dream."

Joan told the story of how her mother and father met and fell in love, which was a sweet and fairly normal story.

For the Hollywood version, she figured that there would be a rival love interest added for one or both of her parents.
