Magical Ethics: Week 15, Period 1

It was the last class somehow, and Alysha was boggling a little at the fact the semester was over already.

"You all survived," she said with a quick smile once everyone was there. "Or if you didn't, someone reanimated you pretty well so there's no smell." Just a little zombie joke. It was the last class of the term.

"It's an ethics class, so I don't see much point in giving a final exam for which you all can celebrate if you feel so inclined. The point of the class was to get you thinking about things and be able to voice and support your thoughts about them. So I'm going back to some of our first questions, and I'd like each of you to answer based on what you've thought about and discussed during the semester. As always, commentary and discussion is completely welcome."

Alysha smiled. "And thank you all for being a good first class. My aunties might even believe now that teaching down south here might not be the death of me."

"Okay then, your questions: what do you consider magical ethics and why should we care about them. Go."

What do you consider magical ethics and why should we care about them?

"I think magical ethics are using your powers in a considerate way," Tara started, speaking softly but with out a stammer. "Using them to help and not to harm, and watching their effects on you as well as what they do to the world around you."

"They're important .. they're important for the same reason thinking about anything is important, I guess. If you're thoughtless and don't payt attention to ethics, you're a lot more likely to mess up."

"I agree," Sookie added, looking over at Tara with a small smile. "They're not, well, rules. But without an internal system to govern our powers, there's so much potential for everything to go badly."

"Magical ethics are using your abilities in a manner you think best under specific situational constraints," Griff rattled off. "And if that's not working for you, try not to piss the wrong people off."

"It's an internal system that guides you to using your powers in a way that you consider to be 'right,'" Karla said, slowly, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "It's understanding that your actions have consequences and that you should be ready to accept those consequences if you wish to take those actions and that there's more to the use of your powers than just what you want or that you feel. It doesn't necessarily mean you never use your powers to harm another, but that the harm you cause in in service to a cause you think greater and more just. It also means recognizing that not everyone has the same ethics and views to govern the use of their power and figuring out how to deal with that."
