Flight Club [after classes]

It was a lot quieter outside the flight shed today than it had been last Monday, and whether that was a good thing or a bad one, Tahiri was withholding judgment on the question.

"Hey, everyone," she said, fiddling with her comlink just for the sake of something to do with her hands. "So . . . end of the semester already, huh? After last night, and with more finals to go for a lot of us, it seems like today should be a pretty easygoing day. Like Warren said a couple of weeks ago, this point in the semester ought to be for fun. Of course, some of us --" she gave Ben an amused but pointed look -- "have different ideas of what counts as fun. So we've got a few different choices for you today, to blow off some of that finals stress steam."

Ben's eyes twinkled back at her. "For the space option, we're going to let you get back into a snubfighter--but this time it's the A-Wing, which is a lot zippier than the X-Wing. I know this makes me a traitor to the family and stuff, but it's totally astral for flying through asteroid fields."

Ben had a strange sense of fun. "So that's what you'll be doing. Try not to get smushed."

Tahiri was so not surprised about his strange sense of fun. "And for your atmospheric option today, have an XCOR EZ-Rocket experimental plane, and see how fast you can get those twin rocket engines to go."

Ben smiled at everyone. "And there's pizza and ice cream, as well. Don't take it too near the sims."

"You already are legendary," Leia said. "I know all about the Hero With No Fear." No, no she didn't. "I'd rather know more about what you're really like."

"But what I'm like now is a far cry from the eighteen year old idiot Dean remembers," Anakin replied.

"But it helped make you what you are today," Leia reasoned. Then she grinned slyly. "And the next time you try to scold me for something I've done, I have ammunition."

"You're much more interested in having the ammunition, aren't you?" Anakin accused with a smile. "Do you have stories of Bail being a young moron?"

Leia didn't have to answer the first question; it should've been obvious. "My aunts may have filled my head with stories of his campaign of harassment against them when he was a child," she said, "but nothing terribly scandalous."

"Then just imagine my childhood like that," Anakin said, even though his childhood had been nothing like that.

"Rouge, Celly, and Tia couldn't tell me what he was like in school," Leia said. "They were off at the Alderaan Select Academy for Young Ladies." She made a face at the mention of that school.

Anakin chuckled. "Are you not fond of the institution?"

"It was awful," Leia said, then began ticking off the reasons on her fingers. "Girls only, though I suppose you'd like that. Table manners and etiquette were boring -- I understood after just one lesson and didn't need weekly reminders. I would rather have been learning history and civics. The other girls were horribly condescending toward non-nobility. The only reason they pretended to like me was because I was a princess. And many of them took drugs, though I had enough sense to tell them where they could put those drugs when they tried to offer me some."

And yet she would marry a drug smuggler in the future. Go figure.

Anakin arched up an eyebrow. "They only pretended to like the princess of Alderaan? Not very bright nobility, are they?"

"They only cared about my title and what favors I could grant them or their families, not me as a person," Leia said, frowning. "But I didn't make it easy for them to like me, after all. I didn't care about their parties and what they did to amuse themselves and how they mocked those less fortunate than themselves. I was appalled by their behavior."

Anakin smiled. That sounded a lot like him.

"And you didn't feel a need to put a good face on your disapproval."

"Not at all," Leia said, smirking again. "I've never been one to hide how I feel. I told them all exactly what I thought of them."

Which was why you were in Fandom now, Leia, because you'd do the same thing to Vader and the Emperor.

Yes, Anakin was replaying her opening salvo to Grand Moff Tarkin in his head.

"That's your mother's fault," he declared with a smile. "I'm galactically renowned for my tact and subtlety."

Regardless of what records she'd read, that wouldn't be mentioned. Ever.

Tarkin was all wet, and it had been her duty to demonstrate that!

"Considering she was close to Bail" -- stop making that face, Anakin -- "that doesn't surprise me," Leia said. "But since you told your entire class that you weren't prone to following the instructions of General Kenobi, I find it hard to believe I didn't get any of it from you, too."

"Well, Obi-Wan was often wrong," Anakin declared.

No he wasn't.

"And how tactfully did you tell him that?" Leia challenged in a teasing tone.

By screaming "I HATE YOU!" from beside a pit of lava?

"Normally by saying 'you're wrong,' but not in front of people," Anakin declared.

Beat.

"Most of the time there weren't people. Does the Council count as people?"

"I don't know," Leia said, trying not to laugh, "would the senate count as people if I stood up and told the Emperor he was wrong in front of them?"

"That would be an incredibly stupid thing to do," Anakin said. Diplomatically.

"Which is why I'm here instead of taking my father's seat right away," Leia sighed.

Anakin nodded. "Give the Emperor a little time to cool down," he counseled.

Not that it would help all that much...

"My feelings on slavery and genocide are already well-known," Leia pointed out. "He's not liable to forget that no matter how long I'm gone."

"Well, yes," Anakin admitted, "but it's very likely that someone else will do something irritating before you return and he can take his wrath on them instead."

"That's not very comforting," Leia said. "I'd never want someone to suffer in my place."
