Really, anyone who walked into this meeting on Thursdays and was still confused by the way Gabrielle kept looking at Emmett like he was a flashing neon purple hydra from another planet . . . had only to look at the karaoke machine set up at the front of the room, next to a box full of glam wigs. (You could practically smell the Aquanet.)

"I still don't see what this has to do with anything," Gabrielle said through her teeth.

"Music helps us express ourselves," Emmett said through his teeth too, because they were in his mouth and the words had to pass them. Unlike some people's teeth, however, they weren't apparently glued together along a horizontal line. "And since sexuality is something that people in some cultures don't get to express very loudly, God invented karaoke for us to sing. Very loudly. Because at the end of the night if somebody gives you grief, you can always just blame it on the song selection sucking."

There was no glue involved, never mind how legitimate the question of how likely Gabrielle would've been to eat paste as a child might be. "Oh, it's the song selection that does that, is it?"

"Any other sucking that might occur backstage is between you and your god, Gabrielle."

"Which one? We do have a lot of them, you know." Emmett, the clock is ticking down on the amount of time between now and Gabrielle's weekly attempt to throttle you.

"Well, aren't you just spoiled for choice. Do you have a god of singing in tune? If you do, you might want to get on your knees to that one before your song comes up."

"Why," asked Gabrielle, narrowing her eyes at him, "do I have a feeling that sounds a lot less innocent in your head than it does in mine? And we might, but I've never met him . . . or her . . . anyway." She waved her hands vaguely at the wigs. "Music is good for getting in touch with your inner feelings. So let's have at it, shall we?"

The song selection does not suck. There are no zombies to play every request you could possibly have ever, but the karaoke machine has a good selection of 20th/21st Century Earth songs of all genres, if a little heavy on the Gloria Gaynor and Aretha.

The wigs are optional.

There is a sign that says the wigs are optional.

Gabrielle insisted on it.

Karla never would have done this if ~~there hadn't been a perfect icon~~ Dinah hadn't given her an ipod for Winsol. But she had and now Karla knew some of the songs from this time and it all kind of spiraled from there.

Let's see...what did she recognize. Cherish? She was pretty sure she could do that one.

When she finished, Leto clapped. He didn't recognise the song, of course, but that wasn't really important.

Karla beamed at Leto. "Was it really obvious in the middle that I didn't know all the words?" she asked. ~~getting the most mileage possible out of this icon, dammit~~ "Dinah gave me a music player for Winsol and there's a lot of music on it."

"It didn't matter," Leto said, "you sang it with enthusiasm." He smiled at Karla.

"It was fun!" Karla said, returning his smile, "Though I hope someone else sings so I don't feel silly, doing it all by myself."

Leto did not pick up a wig.

"I don't need the recorded music," he said, "and I'm not familiar with any of the songs." Despite Alice's attempts at educating him. "But I will sing one from my home world. It celebrates the Fremen way of life and asks for the blessing of the Great Makers, which is another name for the great sandworms of Dune."

The explanation was needed, because the song was in Fremen. And very long. He didn't expected to be interrupted though.

Emmett didn't interrupt. He just listened happily, blissfully ignorant thanks to the language barrier of the fact that Leto's people didn't sing entire joyful ballads to the greatness of their 'sandworms.' Ahem.
