Library [03/31]

Sam was very glad to have his nice, quiet library back, especially since it meant no one was trying to take over the island again. Of course, the down side to things being calm was that Sam found himself at a loss as to what to do with his time, and while he wasn't entirely certain, he had a feeling that his day today would be split between playing The Sims and glaring in the direction of Special Collections.

I'm sticking this up early because I have to be up at Crazyflakes A.M. I should be online around noon!

Chuck came in around his usual time, lunch in tow. He had brought brought salad for Sam and just, ahem, dessert for himself. For no particular reason, really.

"You don't ever hang around Magic Reserves, do you?"

"Hey," Sam said, shaking his head. "No, I've never really gotten involved with the reserves. I don't consider my abilities magical, at least. Why do you ask?"

"Just curious," Chuck lied. Good, he would have felt kind of bad if he screwed with Sam by accident. He pulled his part of lunch out of the bag before handing the rest to Sam. "Seems like the sort of nerdy thing you'd be involved in."

"Gee, thanks," Sam said, smirking in spite of being called nerdy. "I don't know, I feel weird using my powers around other people. I know, that just makes me more of a dork, right?"

"Yes, most definitely," Chuck said before taking a bite of brownie. "If I had powers I'd be using them all the time."

Henry, who probably could use a haircut, had totally been in his office all day, industrially cataloging books.

... not books about haircuts.

"I guess if you had powers, it'd probably be a given that they'd be cool," Sam said, eying Chuck's lunch. "Is that all you're having? Because I feel overly healthy enough as it is."

"I haven't had much of an appetite lately." That was due to stress and he was actually hoping the pot would help him out with that. "I'd give you half of this to help end your healthy streak but if I recall correctly you're not a fan of this kind of brownie."

Sam made a face at Chuck. "Pot brownies again? Do you really think getting high is a good idea?"

"What's the big deal? I get high every day," Chuck said. "It'll help me eat more."

Suuuuure he didn't.

"So, my lil' librarian buddy," Deadpool said without announcing his presence. Because he was a dick.

Yeah, way to make Henry jump a foot, Deadpool. Nice.

"Vice Principal," he greeted suspiciously, once he'd recovered. "Here to reclaim our guest from my Special Collections?"

He could hope.

"Nah, his girlfriend is in there. Tried to kill me once," He said cheerfully. "But that's not whey I'm here."

Henry batted his eyelashes archly. "And to what do I owe the honor of your presence?"

"You, my man. Are just the person I need to help start a sports team." No he wasn't, but shhhh.

"Sports." Henry leaned back in his chair. He was an okay natural athlete, but not really a team sports guy. "What sport do you have in mind?"

"I'm thinkin' softball. Something for us teachers to bond over."

A beat.

"And beer."

"I haven't played that since ... college. Maybe before," Henry said, thinking it thorough. "But if there's beer..."

He rubbed the scruff on his chin. "You aren't going to make me try to coach anybody, are you?"

Deadpool moved around to try putting an arm over Henry's shoulder. "No, no, no--yes. Yes I am."

Henry stiffened, but didn't pull away. "Coaching," he echoed. "I suppose it doesn't matter at all that there's a decent chance that I might vanish into thin air if a ball comes flying at my head."

It was only true, and somehow he suspected it wasn't the weirdest thing Deadpool had even heard that day.

"...Mutant? Cosmic rays? Crazy, poorly described powers?"

Sam gave Chuck a disapproving look ~~although it paled to what Dan was probably capable of~~ and sighed. "You're right, I don't want any. I like having control over myself."

"Time traveler. Among other things, it's my body's version of a panic attack," Henry briefly explained. "... usually it takes a little more than a softball to set it off, but usually I'm not being asked to coach anything."

Chuck rolled his eyes. "You are perfectly capable of being in control over yourself once you build up a tolerance."

Deadpool slapped him on the back. "It'll be fun!"

For certain definitions of fun, maybe.

"Tell me where to be when," he requested wearily.

"Oh yeah? And how long does it take to build up a tolerance?" Sam asked.

"Knew ya'd join in! Saturday work for ya?"

"Depends on how often you do it. It's just like building up an alcohol tolerance," he said with a shrug. "I'd say about a month if you smoke regularly, like two or three times a week."

"I can make it happen."

Look, it was that or double-check his taxes.

"You're a peach," Deadpool replied. "Try not to disappear before theeeen."

"Never happens when I want it to," Henry said dismissively. "See you Saturday."

"Yeah, but then I'd be crazy two to three times a week," Sam said. "That definitely wouldn't work for me."

"Oh you would not. You were fine the last time," Chuck said. "I think you've seen one too many after school specials."

"I wasn't fine! I was goofy and stupid. And it's not afterschool special to point out that that stuff is habit-forming," Sam said, like the dork that he was.

"It is not, you geek," he said. "Trust me, I've done a lot of drugs. I know which ones are habit-forming and which ones aren't."

"You know you freak me out when you say that, right?" Sam asked. "I start thinking about 80's movies with CEO's snorting coke in their offices and dying terribly." Okay, maybe he did pay a little too much attention to after school specials.

"Sorry," Chuck said, even though he felt the same way about hunting. "I guess it's just not that big of a deal where I'm from. We're all addicted to something. A prescription pill dependence is just good etiquette."
