Magical Ethics: Week 9, Period 1

Alysha was absolutely exhausted as the class came in.  It had nothing - well, okay, it had everything to do with the weekend, but mainly because every single Auntie had called to to yell at her for being completely unavailable all weekend.  The number of Gale aunties and the amount they could lecture meant that it had been a very, very, very, very long Monday.

The random crack of thunder that apparently only Alysha could hear just emphasized the Aunties' pissiness.  Though it wasn't like even a Gale could stop this island from making whatever mischief it seemed intent on making.

Therefore the lecture was short.

"A lot of religions and other ethical systems have 'honor thy father and mother' as a tenet," Alysha said.  "Pay attention to your elders.  Do their bidding and respect them.  The question I have for you today is 'how far?'"

And she went to sit on her desk to listen to the discussion.

Ino hated this class today.

Hated.

She didn't want to think about being called Mother after the weekend. Or honouring their wishes. Or anything like that.

Karla was also displeased with today's lecture. Between her memories and Jaenelle's, there were a number of fathers and father-figures that called up intense emotions, few of which could be called respectful.

Griff couldn't help thinking how far he'd gotten the moment he'd failed to honor his own parents. Fuck it all, he was gonna cross his arms and sulk a bit.

It was a very good thing that Sam didn't have any daddy issues, particularly ones that had been poked at hard by the weekend. Oh, wait...

'Mother' was a very, very touchy word for Zack, right about now.

"That depends, I guess," he managed. "Do they want calamity?"

... Yeah.

Ino was just going to sink down in her chair as far as possible and try not to look at him or even breathe in his direction or do anything to remind him of the fact that, uh, yeah...

Well.

She'd been Mother. Augh.

Beka nodded in agreement. "There's plenty of folk who don't deserve to be respected anyone."

"I agree with Tony," Tara contributed. "Everyb-body deserves some respect, just for being human, especially if they know more than you do. But if they betray you in a big way, that ... kind of goes away."

"As long as they have shown they are deserving of your respect," Raven said. Honor her father? No, not so much. Anakin, on the other hand, she listened to and respected.

Karla was pretty much on board with everyone else. "It depends what they do to you first," she said, stony-faced and staring at her desk. "Honoring and respecting is all well and good, so long as they're worthy of it."

Savannah nodded in agreement with this. "My mother, I respect a great deal, but she also works to keep that respect. The family of my father? Not so much."

"Considering what people that you've been raised to honor and respect have to do to lose those feelings? There's no use trying to force it," Karla said, trying hard not to sound bitter.

Re: Discussion [3-9]

[identity profile] walks-two-paths.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Savannah would not push and would not pry, because Karla was her friend and she cared about her.

"And then trying to force you to feel them anyway is wrong." Savannah said quietly. "Just because they're the elder doesn't mean that they are entitled to those feelings. If they do something to lose them..."

Okay, so someone had some issues.

And this was probably not the best place to push or pry, anyway. But perhaps another time and place.

"It's one thing when we're children. But as soon as we leave childhood behind, we have the duty to begin thinking for ourselves anyway."

Helen shrugged uncomfortably. "If I were to truly honor my father, I'd be dead."

"I've defied everything my parents stand for by running away and living with humans." Leda said. "Which pretty much goes against every social statute of Elven society."

Savannah let out a deep breath.

"I don't think that it's right to automatically honor and respect the wishes of your elders unless they have shown that they are deserving of that respect."

Eve, Paige, Lucas, Benicio and most of the teachers at Fandom had her respect.

The people of her father's family besides Sean? Not so much.
