Outdoor Fitness and Strategy [Monday, Period One]

The class had gotten an email telling them class was in the Danger Shop today. What greeted them there was a snow-covered landscape with no small number of trees and bushes breaking up the scenery, and a cheerful Bond. This boded no good.

"Good morning," Bond greeted them, still grinning. "I trust you're all rested, and ready to take your midterm. We'll be doing a variation on the biathlon. For those of you who missed the recent Olympics, this involves a combination of two events I'm quite fond of, which are cross-country skiing and target shooting." Well, that explained the grin. Yup.

He gestured across the snow. "I've marked a course through the forest here, and there are five targets set up at various intervals along the track. Your task will be to ski the course and to shoot each of the targets. They'll be quite obvious when you get to them. Simple really."

"So kit up, then we'll have a quarter of an hour of getting familiar with your skis before we'll start sending you though the course."

[ooc: wait for ocd up]

Deceptively easy but Jonas had come to know better. While he'd been too busy relaxing in the Bahamas to really watch television, that didn't mean he was going to take something that seemed easy to actually be easy.

He knew better.

Kurt didn't like the way Mr. Bond said "simple, really". Really, really didn't. The man was TOTALLY Logan without the claws.

The rifle part was awesome.

The skis were unnerving.

Nothing like picking up a new skill, right?

The weather gear wasn't too difficult to get into. The skis? That was a different story. Jonas fell a few times, buckled them wrong a few more times and then just plains got frustrated the rest of the time.

Eventually, he did succeed but, after all that, he felt more tired than before.

Skis! Robin had always wanted to try this, but he'd never before been able to find skis small enough.

The ski boots being nice and solid meant that even though they weren't shaped anything like his feet, Kurt was able to strap himself in without too much trouble. Sure, they wiggled a lot and were uncomfortable, but they weren't going to fall off, and he could walk in them, and he called that a win.

Actually skiing turned out to be harder than it looked, despite his keen sense of balance, and as someone from the Alps, that depressed him.

Elena strapped the skis on, and attempted to walk around and get a feel for them.

It was not .... going very well.

Kyle had his instructions from Professor Bond and his paint gun. Thankfully, he didn't have skis, because that wouldn't have ended well. He wasn't used to staying stealthy in this much snow, but he still managed to stay out of sight. While he waited for the first people to ski by, he checked for the fifteenth time that the paintballs were harmless.

If they'd been downhill skis, maybe Rose would've been distracted enough by skiing to forget to think about all of this. As it was, cross-country skis kinda sucked, and Rose found herself thinking way too much as she waited for the skiers. Thinking about ambushes and friends and the last time she'd be out skiing, and none of it really made for good thinking material.

Robin huffed along, wee tiny paint gun slung over his shoulder. It was like a bb gun. Only smaller.

Jonas figured out fast that he was not meant to cross country ski anytime soon. He kept up a pretty decent clip but he could feel his legs and arms starting to burn with exertion.

He fumbled a bit with the gun to try and hit the first target before continuing forward, just hoping to finish.

Kyle fired off a warning shot to Jonas' left. It was possible he might not have seen it since it was far off to the side near some bushes.

Beka found herself missing the Bahamas all too soon. The skis were awkward and it took some getting used to. At least the gun wasn't unfamiliar anymore, even if it proved harder to aim like this. Only when she was nearly finished did she get accustomed to it.

Kurt skiied along warily. There was a catch, he was sure of it, but what it might be, he had no idea.

He fully expected there to be an avalanche at some point -- that's what he would have done.

Kyle fired a warning shot in front of Kurt towards the end of the course. He might not have seen it though since Kyle intentionally fired it off far to the side.

Kurt -- by this point VERY on edge -- jumped and looked around, wondering what that noise had been.

Kyle fired again, this time aiming for Kurt's skis.

Kurt jumped again when his skis broke out in an explosion of color. He unshouldered his rifle and spun around, peering into the trees and clutching the weapon like a private in a bad movie about 'Nam. "Who was that?!"

Kyle knew better than to give away his position, so he fired another shot at his skis. He was going to start firing higher in juuuust a second.
