Buffy and Jonathan - thank you very much for volunteering for next week's debate.
Angela, Chiana, Callisto and Archie, I've volunteered you on the basis of your in-class discussions. I think you have valuable perspectives to bring. Chiana, I know that I've assigned you to the view opposite to that you espoused in class, but I believe your different view will help your team to prepare for the arguments the opposition will bring against you.
Buffy, Angela and Chiana will debate the affirmative of the argument "Murder is never acceptable, regardless of circumstance."
Callisto, Archie and Jonathan will debate the negative. It will be easiest if you mentally frame this as "It is not the case that murder is never acceptable, regardless of circumstance."
I expect you to meet with your team over the course of the week to decide who should play the part of what speaker, and to prepare your arguments. Feel free to use my classroom for the purpose. For those of you who have not debated before, I will explain the structure:
First speaker, Affirmative - defines the key words, outlines the arguments his or her team will be making, and begins to address them.
First speaker, Opposition - briefly rebuts (disagrees with) the points 1A made, outlines their own team's arguments, begins to address them.
Second speaker, Affirmative - briefly rebuts 1O, gives the body of the team's argument.
Second speaker, Opposition - briefly rebuts 2A, gives the body of the team's argument.
Third speaker, Affirmative - rebuts all the arguments of the Opposition, in detail. May add one new argument if appropriate.
Third speaker, Opposition - rebuts all the arguments of the Affirmative, in detail. May not add any new points.
You will debate this topic in Monday's class. I advise you to meet to prepare your argument before Monday.
