Outdoor Fitness and Strategy [Monday, Period One]

The class had handwavily received an email telling them to meet Bond in the Danger Shop today, and to bring along a set of bathers. So it really should have come as no surprise to them when they arrived to find it set up as a Olympic-sized swimming pool and their teacher clad in little more than swim-trunks and a whistle.

"Good morning class," he began, with a rather more serious mein than usual. "I realise that we're usually outside for class, but I have something planned for next week which has some pre-requisites we're going to be focusing on today."

"Before we begin, I would like you to place yourselves into one of three groups and to do it honestly. In one group I want those of you who either do not know how to swim, or who feel a lack of confidence in their swimming ability, in the next group I want those of you who do feel confident in your ability as a swimmer, and in the last group I want those of you who possess some kind of formal lifesaving qualification."

He waited for the three groups to sort themselves out before continuing. "Now, those of you in the first group, I'd like you to go down by the shallow end of the pool where I will join you shortly to take you through some swimming lessons. While I am doing that, those in the second group will practice some basic rescue and lifesaving skills required under the supervision of those in the third. I trust those of you in the second and third groups will behave in a responsible and mature fashion."

"One with built in flotation devices?" she snickered. "I'm sorry, but that was just not natural."

Rose liked her own built-in flotation devices quite a bit, thank you.

"Nah, I like the ones that are a little more -" her eyes went obviously to the teacher before she winked at Dru.

Yes, but Rose's were natural as opposed to silicone and surgically implanted. Dru on the other hand, well, she didn't have much to worry about.

"Oh yeah," Dru said, following the other girl's gaze. "That is very nice. Very, very, very nice."

"He actually is too," Rose commented, totally not wanting to get caught eyeing up the half-naked teacher. She grinned over at Dru. "Okay, so no slo-mo running or fake flotation devices. Any other requirements?"

"I've never talked to him outside of class," she admitted. Dru focused back on their end of the pool because getting caught checking out the teacher that was probably the same age as her dad would be awkward and possibly squicky.

"Nope. I'd say watch my hair, but I think it's a lost cause." The humidity in the room had pretty much turned Dru's curly hair into something resembling frizz.

"I've had three classes with him so far," Rose said. "They've all be cool." She grinned sympathetically at Dru's hair. "Next time get it all wet first maybe? It might help."

Oh, she thanked God she got her hair from whoever her dad was instead of her mom's curly red stuff.

"Nothing helps unfortunately," Dru sighed. "I've gotten used to looking like a rat is nesting on my head."

"So do you want to be the rescuer or the rescuee?

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm pretty shit at being rescued," Rose told her. "The other one's more up my alley."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

"Ahh, another hero type person?" she asked.

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Rose snorted. "No way, just a guardian - bodyguard."

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't take this the wrong way, but aren't most bodyguards big burly types?" Dru replied. "Although I suppose young and female lets the surprise factor work in your favor."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
That and being able to kick the big burly guys' collective ass helped too.

"I train a lot," she said. "And yeah, people don't expect the short girl to be protection."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh? What type of training?" she asked, always curious. "Dad's got me doing a lot of Tai Chi mostly because I don't have the strength for something like karate. But he's taught me enough down and dirty fighting that I can hold my own if I have to."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"If you don't have the strength now, why don't you lift and stuff?" Rose asked. "I mean, learning hand-to-hand builds strength. I was a lot weaker when I was five than I am now."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"I do," Dru explained. "And that works fine against most normal people. The problem is a lot of things in the Real World tend to have super speed and super strength. So not matter how much I lift, I'll never match that."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Rose bit down on the first response that came to mind then shrugged. "We figure you have to do whatever it takes to do the job."

Because the girl who topped out at 5'2" didn't really see much point in being annoyed that her opponents were generally taller and - the Strigoi at least were much stronger and faster.

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Dru only had her by about two inches. She understood short. And like Karla, had a severe lack of curves.

"Oh yeah. I'll keep trying. It's just right now my part of the job is less on the physical side and more support," she said. "Dad does most of the physical stuff. And he's a bit on the protective side."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"That's kinda cool," Rose said. "That he's worries like that. Support like - research and stuff? Or what?"

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Well it's just the two of us. So we have to look out for one another."

Dru dipped her foot in the pool as she tried to work up the motivation to jump in and be saved. "Some research, some recon," Dru answered. Which was a vague way of explaining what she could do with the touch. "Wards and hex lifting, gun care, get away driving, first add, and occasionally shooting stuff that needs it."

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] guardianborn.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
"You can do magic?" Rose asked, not terribly worried about the assignment. That placed Dru in a different category. "You're not a potential slayer, are you?"

Though she'd probably have heard from Kennedy if Dru was.

Re: Deep End - OFS [Week 6]

[identity profile] svetocha-blooms.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Warding's not magic. It's just a matter of will," she shrugged. "Anyone can do it.* As for hexes and things like that, Gran always said I had 'the touch'. It's just a little something extra." And despite knowing most people in Fandom didn't care about things like that, it still felt weird to talk about it.
