Library [1-21]

When George got to the library, it seemed that something had been at work on the books all night. The kids books were filed away with the history books, the cooking books with art, the books on American politics completely hidden behind some of the atlases.

He sighed as he realised the extent of the random reshuffling, but at least he had hot chocolate to drink as he finished the normal library tasks and moved on to reshelving half the library.

If anyone needed him, he was around.

Paige stopped by the library before heading to her office. She managed to find a few books on magic from other worlds that she thought might be useful.

Henry took a second to drop his bag in his office, then went back out into the main library to help George with the reshelving.

Henry looked more befuddled than anything as he wandered up to George, arms full of books. "Do we know why the books on Asian culture are mixed in with the Spanish-language section today?"

He didn't expect a rational answer; it was just venting.

"Mayhap they were bored only talkin' t'themselves?" George suggested.

It could happen!

Karla entered the library a little bit more confidently today--mostly because she'd thought ahead and grabbed lunch from Luke's before heading back to the school. "I brought food," she said, holding up the bag.

He grinned at her. "I dunno which is better. You comin' or you bringin' food," he teased.

"Cultural exchange?" Henry offered. "Sure. I'll go with that. Do the books do this a lot?"

"Maybe I only brought enough for myself," Karla said smugly. "Rather, maybe that's what I'll say if you don't figure out which is better."

"Aye, sometimes," he agreed. "Once I found 'em all havin' a tea party in the office. They really didn' want t'move."

"Well,yer jus' hear t'visit th' books, right?" he teased. "So mayhap I don' want t'be competin' wit' 'em./"

"That's true." Karla dimpled up at George. "I'll have a lovely little picnic by myself in the stacks. Sounds like fun, actually."

"... and someday, I'll stop asking questions," Henry said, and rubbed his forehead. "Any of them get tea on themselves?"

"A'course not!" he protested. "I did make 'em all wear napkins once I found 'e,."

"If y'don' be careful, th'books might try t'join ye," George pointed out. "They're a bit active today."

"Then I'm only grateful for such a conscientious aide," Henry said.

George snickered at that. "Don' ever say tha' t'me mam if yer still here next parents' weekend. She'll have an apoplexy an' pass out."

"..." Karla just looked at George for a minute. "You aren't teasing, are you."

It wasn't really a question.

"'m not," he agreed. "They moved all around during th' night. 've been reshelvin' 'em all mornin'."

"Would you like a hand?" Karla offered. "I mean, since I'll be ignoring you in favor of the books anyways."

"If yer helping me, 'm not sure it counts as ignorin'," he pointed out. "Y'might have t'talk t'me."

"I was going to be very intent on my work and pretend I don't see you at all," Karla assured him. "This job can't be too hard, Mr. Not-So-Quick."

That wasn't stopping her from opening up the bag and laying out lunch in front of them. "Are you planning on going to Merlin's birthday party tonight?" she asked.

"I don' know him at all," George admitted, sitting down. "T'would be strange, no?"

"An' nah, not so hard a'tall until the books start movin' on ye and yer not sure where ye come from." Okay, he was talking about Special Collections there but nyah.

"It would probably depend on whether you went with someone who knew him or not," Karla said, handing over a piece of banana bread. "But I could see where it would be weird."

Further conversation was paused until she's eaten a mouthful or two of salad. "The books move? It sounds almost fun--like a labryinth made of books and library shelves. Like an adventure from a novel or something." She beamed at him. "That would be a fun picnic."

"Who do I know who knows him?" he asked, taking the bread with a sweet smile.

"If ye think this is interestin', ye should see Special Collections," George said. "Tis where they keep all th' dangerous books an' that moves and things live in it and gives an adventure whenever ye go in."

"The question isn't who do you know who also knows Merlin," Karla told him with a wink. "It's who knows both of you and would be willing to take you along? It would have to be someone with a lot of patience, that's for sure."

In another minute, they'd be pulling each other's hair and throwing sand to say 'I like you.'

"Special Collections?" Not Karla was positively intrigued. "What kind of stuff? What's so dangerous about a library?"

"I'll tell her you're always late, rarely sober, and usually indolent," Henry promised. "Would that be less likely to cause her to faint from shock?"

"I dunno," he said thoughtfully, totally reaching over to pull a lock of her hair. "I do know Arthur, but I'd not want t'be askin' him for anythi'. Anyone else?"

"Magic books and stuff about real people that's not history an' dangerous books of all types," George explained. "But I think - that part of th' library is alive."

"Well, Dinah will be there," Karla said, allowing the hair-pulling, but only because she intended to thump him for it later. "And Francine and Tony Foster, too. I'm trying to come up with someone who likes both of you, but I'm having some trouble." She followed that comment up by tossing a cherry tomato at him.

Ah, young infatuation.

"Alive? Really?" Her look suggested that she wasn't sure whether she should believe him or not. "Really-really?"

"That'll cause her t'whack me somethin' fierce," George admitted. "Mayhap halfway between?"

"I'll do my best to strike a good balance if it comes up."

"Yer a good man, Librarian," George decided, snaring a book on costumes from fleeing into the housewares system.

"Tis difficult, hm," George decided. "I don' knów much of them either. Mayhap I need t'get out more."

The cherry tomato, however, was totally caught in his mouth. Dork.

He shrugged. "I dunno! But that's what they said so...mayhap?"

"That is," Henry said, as he adeptly moved to block the path of the runaway book, "my goal in life."

Honestly? This was harder than she'd thought. "I'm starting to get the idea that our social circles don't overlap much," she said thoughtfully, before giving him a smile. "I'm glad we decided to be friends, though."

And as for Special Collections..."I don't suppose they let just anyone in there?"
