people suck except when they don't | thursday | period 2 | january 14

Loki was sitting on his desk, swinging his legs and waiting for the students to file in and take their seats. He even let them socialize a bit before he hopped up and started talking.

"Welcome back," he said, always polite. "It's good to see so many of you made it back because now we get into the real fun of this course. Last week was just the same ole, same ole. This week, we really find out why people can fucking suck sometimes."

"Today, we're going to talk about your parents, guardians, protectors, caretakers, whatever the fuck you want to call them," he said, rubbing his hands together. "Usually, and I say usually knowing some of you grew up without the benefits of these type of people, these people will be your first exposure to authority. And sometimes? They fucking suck. They don't want you to do anything fun. They want you to do your homework, or your training, or your chores or anything in that fucking realm. And they'll usually throw out rote reasons of improving yourself, improving your grades, improving some shit. Most of that's a bunch of shit, I think. Sure, you'll improve yourself but at what fucking expense? You lose out on fun which can also improve yourself. And they seem to think that doing fucking math or running laps or weeding a garden is going to make you a better person but if you ask them how, they can't fucking tell you."

Loki wondered if he could throw God into this group but decided to hold that back. He really didn't need to be struck down in front of his class after all.

"There are several easy ways to buck this authority, though." And Loki knew just about every fucking trick in the book, thank you. "The easiest way is to just not be there. Of course, this holds the possibility of getting fucking punished so use it sparingly. Unless you're going to leave for good, don't always just not be there. Bargaining might work too. Not always with parents but for those of you that come from places where you're in a military or something of the sort, you might be able to bargain with your CO or leader. Promise to do a shitload of stuff later in exchange for leaving now. Keep it manageable though. Don't promise too much because when you can't do it? You're fucking screwed. You can fake shit too. If you're told to do your homework? Fucking do it. Just do it badly. From what I've found, most parents don't know what the fuck their kids are doing now. You show them a page of scribbled equations that are completely fucking wrong, they'll look at it, think it looks right and let you go. Easy."

Of course, there was always the possibility of running into geniuses but Loki couldn't account for everything.

"Those are just a few fucking possibilities. Giving you all of them would just make the class activity less fucking fun. Today, we're going to see how you'd deal with a parent, guardian, or something of that sort when they try to make you do something you don't fucking want to do. I'll give you a scenario, you stand up and say how you'd deal with it. Anyone can question your choice and you know I'll be questioning anything. Sound good? Good. We'll get started."

"Okay, but I don't see why I can't do both," he said. "I mean, the doctor's usually closes around five and most bars don't start filling up until ten."

Karla's lip twitched. "It's when I use Craft to Heal someone," she said, idly playing with the string of beads on her wrist. "In this case, I wouldn't be, but I could feign it convincingly."

"My grandma lives in Florida with my cat." So that was a no.

"Everything has a price," Karla said. "If I set it up to look like a very complicated Healing, not only is it something I'd have to concentrate on to make sure it was healed right, I'd also be expending my own energy to make sure that the Craft works right. I'd want a huge meal and a bed shortly thereafter."

She frowned, trying to figure out how to phrase it so Loki would understand. "Let's take a simple cut. I have to sing away the pain, stop the bleeding, coax the tissue and muscle back together, and burn away any incipient infection. A broken bone requires me to refuse the break, sometimes even growing new bone or reintegrating all the little pieces if it's a really nasty break. Nerve damage is a real bitch to Heal as are burns. Even stuff I can Heal quickly and easily still still require a huge outlay of energy." She was starting to get a little carried away, yes.

Dan sighed. "Fine. I'd probably just take my grandmother to her appointment but since that's not the assignment...I don't know, I'd ask if my sister could take her instead and then I'd owe her."

"Probably not." Jenny hadn't gotten to that slutty drug mule stage of her life just yet. "She's pretty nice."

"And I probably wouldn't have much trouble finding someone to go along with my plan, either. A Healing takes a lot out of both the Healer and the patient, so she'd get the afternoon free, same as I would."

"Only under the very specialest of circumstances," Karla agreed, doing her best not to look at anyone besides Loki. "Especially since, in the world of not-this-assignment, I would have loved to see my grandparents again."

"I'd jus' sneak out," George said with a shrug. "Me mam'll cope fer th' night, an' I'll do it th' next day. Probably."

And then came the blushing, which Karla was going to stubbornly ignore and pretend to take notes.

And perhaps glance around once or twice. Not for anyone in particular, really.
